LOWEST FOR FORTY YEARS. IMPROVEMENT IN BRITAIN. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright London, July 11. While the world tonnage under construction during the three months ended June 30 was the lowest for 40 years, British shipbuilding figures shc\w a continuation of the increased noted in the first quarter. The world tonnage under construction was 732,495, and'British 287,502, the latter representing an increase of 35,101 compared with the previous quarter. The tonnage under construction abroad was 444,993, the lowest recorded since December, 1909. Figures for the leading countries were: France 92,406, Japan 82,280, Sweden 78,232, Germany 49,855. Twenty-two oil tankers are being built with a tonnage of 160,464. Of these Britain is building four and Sweden seven. Ninety per cent, of the tankers under construction are. motor-ships. The tankers comprise nearly 22 per cent, of the total world’s tonnage under construction.
