RURAL AUCTION COMEDY

FARMERS’ UNPAID TITHES, An amusing situation arose a few weeks ago at New House Farm, near Leominster, Herefordshire, when the head bailiff of Leominster County Court, Mr. Harry Blundell, attended to conduct a sale of 15 ewes and lambs. The sale was arranged under a distress warrant for tithes of £l5. When it was found that other sheep had broken into the field and had got intermixed with those for sale, .questions were fired at the. bailiff as to which he was offering for sale. He replied that he was offering 15 ewes and lambs in the field, and the buyers could pick them out for themselves. The farmers said they ha 1 come many miles to buy the sheep. If they were not produced they wanted their expenses. They could not bid without seeing the 15 ewes and lambs. The bailiff said that as there were no bids, the sheep would be withdrawn from the jrUe and would n&£t be offered

by tender. Three cheers were given for the bailiff and this finished the little rural comedy.
