CRITICISM OF MEAT BOARD

OUTLIVED ITS USEFULNESS UNIFORMITY OF GRADING URGED. FARMERS’ UNION DISSATISFIED. “PROTECT INDIVIDUAL EXPORTER.” By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Sharp criticism was levelled against the policy of the Meat Producers’ Board at a meeting of the Dominion executive of the Farmers’ Union to-day. Mr. A. Dickie moved on behalf of Southland: “That the grading of our meat be reduced to the grades it is sold in London and that the Meat Board be urged to protect the individual producer exporter from being eliminated as an exporter by the increasing costs thrust on him if he consigns.” The remit was carried.

Mr. Dickie said New Zealand meat on reaching retail shops in England was lumped. Mr. J. E. Benson (Poverty Bay) said this was just another instance of the mismanagement of the Meat Producers’ Board, which had outlived its usefulness and was “lying down on its job.”

“We intend to see that there will be a radical change in the personnel of the board at next election,” Mr. Benson said.

■'Mr. W. J. Polson, the president, said he entirely agreed with the second part of the remit. He had brought a Bill before Parliament but had failed to get it before the House last session solely owing to the opposition of the Meat Board. Further .criticism- of the board was taken in committee.
