Suppression of Poaching. Determined to make every effort to suppress poaching in its district, the council of the Stratford Acclimatisation Society decided last night to appoint a paid ranger.

Trees Over 50 Years Old. To make room for a plantation of English trees the Stratford A. and P. Association intends to establish, nearly 20 upstanding pine trees at the Stratford showgrounds are being felled. The association took over the trees with the grounds 23 years ago, but the trees were there nearly 30 years before that. An examination and count of the annual rings revealed a total of over 50 on some trees. The association is providing itself with a supply of fencing posts.

Wrestling Match Arranged. The Stratford Wrestling Association succeeded yesterday in finalising a bout between Whiskers Blake and Count Joseph Varga-to take place at Stratford on July 20. Lights of Broadway.

Observant people who noticed that the chain of street lights on Broadway, Stratford, were pitting their feeble powers against the strength of the sun may have wondered whether something had gone wrong, or perhaps whether the Borough Council was wasting money. The staff knew all about it, however. The lights were' switched on to test the globes to enable the renewal of defective ones.

Midhirst Rugby Team. Treasure Hunt at Show. The Stratford Municipal Band conducted a treasure hunt at the winter show last week, the result being: Winning peg, No. 104, Mrs. Anderson, Whangamomona. A weight-judging competition for an iced cake was won by Mr. H. Cleaver, who judged the correct weight, 101 b. 2oz. Heavyweight Milker. The heaviest milker tested under the Central Taranaki Herd-Testing Association last season gave 5| tons of milk in 288 days. The cow is an 11-year-old grade Friesian owned by Mr. L. E. Hann, Skinner Road. Friendly Society Cards. Card evenings for the Stratford Friendly Societies’ trophy were continued on Monday night, the scores being Foresters 28, Rechabites 23, Triumph 18, Druids 10. Golf at Ohura. In the bogey competition at Ohura during the week the best cards were handed in by P. Deere 3 down, and A. Wakeford 5 down. For the captain’s trophy D. Budd beat N. Wagstaff 1 up and A. Wakeford beat W. K. Williams 2 and 1. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. W. D. Hart, has arrived in Eltham to take up the position of accountant at the Bank of New Zealand. Mr. Hart was a member of the Eltham branch staff several years ago. Mr. Gordon, who has been relieving, leaves for Kaikohe. Mr. and Mrs. R. Major left Stratford yesterday for Upper Hutt, where Mr. Major has been appointed town clerk. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. The grand military old-time dance in the Eltham Town Hall next Monday promises to be an outstanding spectacular event. The area military officers have been invited and a large assemblage of dancers is expected. The ninth annual Celtic ball will be held in the Stratford Town Hall tomorrow night. A first-class orchestra has been engaged.

BRITISH DRAMA LEAGUE. COUNCIL’S STRATFORD ACTIVITY. Since a public meeting was held at Stratford over a month ago to report the progress of the Central Taranaki council of the British Drama League, preparations have been in full swing for the attainment of the council’s first aim —a festival of community drama on August 19. . Four circles are already rehearsing plays at Stratford, and there are several

other circles that are hopeful of obtaining plays with casts suitable for the membership before the closing date for entries, Saturday week. In addition ' to the circle’s activity rehearsing for acted plays, there are six or seven other circles in Stratford alone occupied with play-reading, and inquiries have been received from several districts outside Stratford with a view to the furtherance of the league. The cup presented by Mrs. Fredric for competition at the August festival is on exhibition in a Broadway window.

The council has obtained the services of Miss Elizabeth Blake to judge the productions.
