‘ILL-FEELING’ AT REEFTON
TERRIFIC EXPLOSION OCCURS CHARGE OF WILFUL DAMAGE ALLEGED THREAT BY ACCUSED. TWO MEN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Reefton, Last Night. In the Magistrate’s Court this morning James McLay Wright and Arthur Lewis Schroder were charged with wilfully damaging J. Mohra’s residence at Capleston by an explosion while Nohra and others were in the dwelling. Nohra’s evidence showed there was illfeeling between the accused and himself. He had also been threatened by Wright’ that all the windows of the house would be shattered. The explosion took place 47 feet from the house. Clarence John Gerrish in evidence, said that Wright had said he would blow the black — up, and the explosion took place a few minutes later. Schroder was with witness when the explosion occurred. Robert Gugich said that about 25 plugs of gelignite must have been exploded, and this statement was supported by C. M. Lipscombe, the Waitahu Company’s engineer. Evidence for the police was taken this afternoon and the accused were committed for trial at the Greymouth Supreme Court. No application was made for bail.
