FITZROY KING CARNIVAL.

Four years ago the Fitzroy Tennis Club held a very successful “popular girl” contest and raised enough money to build a comfortable and roomy pavilion. Those were the good old days when money was easy to get. Since then the club has fallen on evil days, through no fault of its own but three sheer hard luck. Two years after the pavilion was built there came a disastrous cyclone and in the twinkling of an eye the building was reduced to a mass of ruins. Nothing was left intact, the roof was tom off and deposited in fragments several yards away, the walls were left standing but all at different angles; there was nothing left but a wreckage of twisted and battered iron and timber. Then came the job 1 of sorting and selecting any sound pieces which would do in the rebuilding and the work of reconstruction began. Truly a heart-breaking task. It took all the courage and determination of the club members (and all the funds too), to re-erect the building but in the end it was done and now the club has another pavilion, not a fine new building like the first but a poor battle-scarred relic of the old. Still it serves its purpose and members are now starting on another effort to raise money to keep the club going. This time it is a “king carnival,” and members are relying on the sympathy of the residents of Fitzroy and others to help them, in this venture. There are three kings aspiring to the throne, one red, one white and one blue, and in these columns from time to time, those who are in sympathy with the club will see opportunities whereby they will be able to afford practical* help. For instance the committee of the Blue king is holding a Swiss carnival in the Fitzroy hall on June 13 and promises a night of enjoyment to all who come along. It does not ask for something for nothing, but will give good measure of fun and pleasure.
