DEBATING SEASON OPENS

DISCUSSION AT NEW PLYMOUTH. The New Plymouth Debating Society opened its season last night with a debate in the Hygienic room on the subject “That the youth of his Dominion is worthy of no more than the bankrupt heritage it is likely to receive.” The chair was taken by the president, Mr. W. C. Weston. Mr. Gordon Fraser acted as judge. Mr. C. Fookes (leader) and Mr. R. G. Howell supported the motion and Mr. C. Strombom (leader) and Mr. A. S. McGregor opposed it. After the subject had been discussed briefly by other members of the society Mr. Fraser helpfully criticised the speakers in an entertaining fashion. The president was accorded a vote of thanks for his donation of a prize for the most improved new member of the society this season. The next fortnightly debate will be on the proposition: “That the New Zealand Legion shows definite promise of proving a valuable factor in the reconstruction of the Dominion.”
