SENIOR FREE PLACES

THE EXAMINATION “SURVEY.” NOT NEEDFUL THIS YEAR. An announcement in the supplement to the New Zealand Educational Gazette of May 16 states it has been decided by the Minister of Education that, this year, candidates for senior free places will not all be required to sit for the intermediate examination in November next. Last year’s compulsory examination has served its purpose of providing means for a general survey of the standards of education obtaining in the various centres, and has not been without value to many of the individual schools concerned. It has not been thought necessary, however, to repeat the survey this year. The former method of awarding senior free places—that is, by accrediting the better candidates in each school on the principal’s recommendation, and requiring the remainder to sit for the intermediate examination—will be reverted to for the present. It is possible, however, that a lower proportion of candidates will be accepted by accrediting than has been customary in the past. Candidates other than those seeking to qualify for senior free places will continue to be admitted under the conditions prescribed in the regulations.
