Dr. W. P. Gowland, professor of anatomy at Otago University, is visiting friends in Taranaki. Messrs. J. A. Bissett and Robb, of the British Phosphate Commission offices at Auckland and Melbourne, are visitors to New Plymouth. The newly-appointed French Ambassador, M. Corbin, was received by the King at-Buckingham Palace on' Wednesday, says a British Official Wireless message.

Mr. H. E. Blyde, Lepperton, was yesterday re-elected president of the North Taranaki Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Various members spoke eulogistically of the president’s untiring efforts in the interests of the union. The president suitably replied. The loss sustained during the year by the death of Mr. E. Marfell, Stratford, who had been a valued member of the executive, was referred to by Mr. H. E. Blyde, provincial president, at the annual conference of the Fanners’ Union yesterday. v

Blyde in his presidential address at the annual conference of the Farmers’ Union at Inglewood yesterday. The district was losing a man who was a friend of the farmer. Mrs. Mary Jane stock, widow of Mr. Christopher Keating Stock, died at her residence, Ballance Street, Vogeltown, New Plymouth, at the age of 87 years on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Stock came to New Zealand from Darlington, England, 54 years ago and settled for a time at Huirangi. Later they moved to Smart Road, and then to Normanby. When they returned to North Taranaki, they acquired land on Albert Read. It was while residing there that Mr. Stock died, and Mrs. Stock then went to live at Palmerston North. A few years ago she came to New Plymouth. Some months ago Mrs. Stock fell and fractured her thigh, and since then she had been more or less confined to her home. She leaves two sons, Messrs. William Stock, Dannevirke, and Walter Stock, Auckland. A granddaughter has lived with Mrs. Stock for some years.
