STRATFORD ITEMS

Mrs. Bell, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs. S. Macalister. Mr. and Mrs. W. Harris are visitors to Wellington. Miss Joan Coleman was a visitor to New Plymouth for the coster ball. Mrs. E, H. Young was hostess for the play-reading circle on Thursday night. Mrs. L. Fume was a contract bridge hostess on Wednesday evening. The play-reading club met at the residence of Mrs. Richards on Friday evening. Mrs. G. Hall was hostess for some friends on Wednesday afternoon. Miss Grace North is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Parsloe, Normanby. Mr. and Mrs. G. Whyte and family left for Wanganui during the week. Mrs. Campbell was “at home” on Friday afternoon. Young and Miss Skoglund (Christchurch). Mrs. Haselden gave a delightful "at home” on Wednseday afternoon, her guests being Mesdames S. Porrit, Shaw (New Plymouth), D. Morris, Spence, Budge, Yamdley, Misses M. Porrit and Skoglund (Christchurch). During the week a party of 40 young people from Hawera, Mangatoki, Eltham and Stratford “surprised” the Misses Patricia and Shirley Nowell at their home at Ngaere. Dancing and games were enjoyed till the early hours, a jolly time being spent.

A very enjoyable bridge afternoon was given by the committee of the Girl Guides in the Windsor on Thursday. Afternoon tea was nerved by those in charge. Amongst those present were Mesdames Urwin, Fredric, G. Hall, Uniacke, D. Steven, Lyons, Budge, Amess, D. White L. Riera, Rawles, Cooper, F. Dixon, F. Bowler, McMillan, D. Davies, Moon, P. Thomson, Petrie, Bellringer, R. Carryer, Weston, Haselden, White, B. Young, J. Richards, C. Williams, W. H. Young, Misses Hunt, Squires, Rogers, Anderson and Cable.

A farewell afternoon in honour of Mrs. H. Burmester was arranged by Mrs. G. Hall and Mrs. J. Fredric and held at the residence of Mrs. Fredric on Friday afternoon. The guest of honour was presented on behalf of those ‘ present with a dish in a silver stand, while many expressions of regret were made on account of Mrs. Burmester’s departure. Those present were Mesdames Fredric, G. HaU, H. Burmester, Roberton, S. Porrit, Penn, McDowall, Turner, Macalister, Bell (Wellington), D. Malone, Lyons, H. Kirkwood, T. King, Budge, Hall, Amess, CressweU, Furrie, H. Good, Dr. Doris Gordon, Hunt, Jardine, Pitt, F. Fryer, R. Tyrer, P. Thomson, W. H. Young, E. H. Young, Richards, Jeffries, Robins, Robson, Major, Middleton, North, Coleman, Dixon and Vincent'and Misses Wilson, Beswick, Squires and Chadwick. During the week the ladies of the Stratford Golf Club gave a farewell afternoon to Mrs. H. Burmester at the residence of Mrs. E. S. Rutherfurd. Mrs. Rutherfurd on behalf of the members of the club presented the guest of honour with a set of coffee cups and a sheaf of flowers. Amongst those present were Mesdames D. Morris, J. Boon, Seyb, Knewstubb, R. Fryday, Bishop, W. Williams, H. Graham, K. Neal, W. Boon, Newell, A. Coleman, Shaw, C. Hart and B. Armstrong and Misses R. Furrie, M. Whittle, L. Penn, H. Penn, M. Malone, J. Henry, M. Porrit, 0. Masters, J. Coleman and M. Lyons. The coming-of-age of Mr. William Cook, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Cook, Regan Street, was celebrated on Wednesday at the Masonic Hall. A jolly time was spent in dancing, competition and games. Mr. Tracey Boyle was master of and Waite’s Adelphi Orchestra supplied the music. Amongst those present were Mesdames A. Cook, G. Grace and the Misses V. Cook, D. Cook, J. Elgar, T. Schweiters, W. Rawles, K. Reeves, E. Reeves, Dwyrer (2), E. Irving, T, McCready, B. Hale and J. Hale. LOWGARTH W.D.F.U. BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Lowgarth branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held on Wednesday, Mrs. A. A Piper presiding over an attendance of 16 members. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs. L. Sulzberger, who is in a private hospital at Stratford. Hopes for a speedy recovery, were expressed. Carter, president of the Hunter Road branch, explained the making of wool quilts. She described the procedure from the time the wool was taken off th? sheep until it became the finished article, a beautiful two-coloured quilt stitched and finished like the most expensive eiderdowns. • Mrs. Carter was accorded an attentive hearing and her work was much admired. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. A. Styles and Miss Aileen Piper.
