NOTED JERSEY PIONEER.

F. W. CORNWALL’S OAKLANDS STUD.

Associated with the Jersey breed in Taranaki for over'.4o years, Mr. F. W. Cornwall,-founder of the celebrated Oaklands Stud, has certainly done .more than any other breeder to gain for Taranaki the well-deserved reputation of being the home of .the Jersey, in New Zealand. His carefully thought out breeding plan/ in which-he has made use of the best imported blood very freely, has enabled him to get remarkably close to his goal Quality, in both show ring and butter-fat production, have been cornr bined ;in this stud, and as at different, times .high-quality blood strains have been, judiciously introduced, Mr.. Cornwall’never hesitated to pay very high prices to import ' the strain which his great knowledge, derived from careful study of breeding characteristics, recognised would benefit his stad. His stud contains , many of .the world’s most famous blood lines. K.C.B. and Monopolist blood has very largely predominated., Then inconjunction with Mr. E.'Griffiths/Mr. Cotwall imported that great bull Campanile’s Sultan, which with the Doctor, Golden Broth and. Cicero left wonderful influence on the herd. 'Another sire that left his mark was the renowned Holly Bank Squire by the Squire (imp.)—Lady’s Bilberry. This champion butter-fat bull left a host of champions, as well .as numerous, tested daughters with outstanding records. Brampton Merry Boy (imp.) was then mated with ' the heifers of the stud,’ and their progeny won'? numerous classics and ‘ championships, -including the Stratford Jersey Oaks two years in' succession. On’one occasion the stud filled? third place as well. Sybil’s Oxford Noble, by the imported Clarion from the imported Sybil’s Gipsy, was next introduced to the stud with distinct success, and later, at Mr. E. Griffiths’ Hamilton, clearing sale; he paid 510 guineas for hfe dam, the beautiful Island bred Sybil’s . Gipsy, which seured. several championships both in Jersey and in New . Zealand/ Then Mr. Cornwall; imported Brampton Boy Volunteer as a calf. This he considered the best bull for breeding quality ever imported into New Zealand. The bull was sold' to Mr.. Mitchell at Mr. Cornwall’s safe .in 1929 for 505 guineas, and Mr. Cornwall’s high opinion was recently borne put by a breeder who inspected the stock left by him at Mr. Mitchell’s stud. Mr. Cornwall kept three Of his daughters, including Oakland’s Felicity, reserve champion a# the New Plymouth show. ■

Stock from Oaklands Stud have formed the foundation of many successful studs throughout the- Dominion, Australia and South Africa. It is only on rare occasions that breeders have the opportunity of securing such a combination of noted blood’ lines; therefore the offering of 12 young cows, four yearling heifers,- and three yearling and three two-year-old bulls: from the Oaklands Stud at the June Jersey cattle sale at Mr. Cornwall’s farm on Wednesday next should appeal to all lovers of the Jersey. Among tfie cows to be submitted must be mentioned Thomy croft Venus, a very fine dairy* cow with great blood strains. She was purchased at Mr. Hodgkin’s clearing sale, and so highly did that breeder hold her, that he retained her daughter, grand-daughter and ’ great-gfand-daughter. She has not been tested, but running with the herd she has milked up to 5741 b. A three-year-old daugher of hers by Aldan’s Majesty, combines the strains of the imported Marshal Aldan and Majesty Fox (imp.), as well as Neathead, giving her wonderful butterfat backing. ■ Another cow that will make an irresistible 'appeal is Alrriadale Cowslip. by Te Rapa Lad, who has no fewer than 26 C.O.R. 'daughters. His daughters have been in the Waikato Oaks five years in succession. lie goes .back to the imported Majesty’s Fox. Her dam is the imported Golden Fem’s Maid, a noted breeding matron whose sire, Fems Oxford Noble,-with 107 tested daughters up to 10471 b of butter-fat, was sold for 5000 guineas. Oakland’s Eligible is by .a full brother- of Holly Oak Annie, whilst on the damis side she is closely related to-Woodland’s Felicie. : The heifers are a- choice lot by Laurel Brae Sultan, half brother to Snow View Squirein. One- heifer is by .Oaklands Rambler, who is a line-bred Hollybank Squire bull. The cows have been served by Laurel Onae Sultan, a daughter of whom has been mated to Fem Queen Volunteer. Among a select lot of bulls may be mentioned the two-year-old Oaklands Sybil’s Felicity, out of the reserve champion Oaklands Felicity, by Mr. J. S. Jones’ Royal champion imported bull Sybil’s Volunteer. Though Mr. Cornwall has been incapacitated by illness for some time from -taking an active part in the work of the stud, that department is in-, the capable hands of his manager, Mr. A. H. Grover, who has been associated with Mr. Cornwall for the past 22 years. Mr. Cornwall, however, takes as.keen an interest as he ever did tn the operations of the stud, which he still successfully .directs.
