WHY WAIT UNTIL SATURDAY?

(To the Editor.) Sir, —On a very recent Saturday morning the writer had occasion to journey from Whangamomona to Stratford to transact some business with the Post Office in Stratford. On arrival there at 11.45 a.m., owing to the train being delayed, I found the post office staff working at top speed endeavouring to cope with what appeared to be an exceptionally busy last-minute rush, especially at the money order branch, where the clerk was attending to money orders, unemployment levies, deposits arid withdrawals, with no end of inquiries regarding all kinds of things. On looking over those doing business I noticed they were mostly local business men, or members of their families or staffs. My complaint is this. Why do the local people leave their business until the 11th hour, which means that people who have travelled long distances are forced to return home with much of their business unfinished, owing to the very limited time available before the closing of the money order branch after the arrival of the toin from the eastern districts. It is bad policy on the part of Stratford people and compels country residents to take themselves and their business .to other Taranaki towns where they receive more consideration than Stratford gives them. In conclusion, may I suggest that the Stratford Chamber of Commerce move in the direction of getting the postal officials to provide extra accommodation to deal with motor registration, unemployment levies, etc., in rush hours, thus leaving the money order clerk free to deal with the affairs of that department.—l am, etc., NOT BITTEN TWICE. Whangamomona, May 1.
