FAREWELL SOCIAL HELD. A farewell social was on Saturday evening tendered Mr. and Mrs. H.' N. Dudley and family prior to their departure for Waikato. The social, was organised by the school committee and willing help was given by friends and neighbours. Over 70 adults assembled for danci/g, cards, games and music in the cosy and spacious rooms. The evening was a particularly happy one, terminating in a “community sing” prior to supper and the presentation ceremony. Dance music was voluntarily supplied by the Misses Gatenby, Mrs. J. Anderson, Miss I. Carlson and M. Eliason (KapunD. Mr. A. E. Mahon sang two solos. In bidding farewell and God-speed to Mr. and Mrs. Dudley on behalf of the school committee and those present, Mr. B. H. Parker, chairman, expressed regret at losing the services of a good member of the committee and residents who commanded their regard and esteem. In wishing them luck the chairman asked the guests of the evening to accept a rug as a token of the esteem in which they were held in the district. Mr. W. Perry also eulogised Mr. Dudley as a good neighbour and farmer whose departure was greatly regretted. After musical honours were sung Mr. Dudley replied. He said they left the district with many regrets, and appreciated the friendships made. On behalf of Mrs. Dudley and himself he expressed thanks for the gift and the honour bestowed on him by the large gathering. He regretted he had not been able to do more for the school committee, with which he had worked harmoniously. Supper was supplied by the ladies. Prominent among the helpers were Mesdames Johnson, Hammond, J. P. Marx, C. W. Carlson, Gatenby, A. McGuinness, A. E. Mahon, Misses D. and E. Gatenby, M. I. Bowden, P. Parker, and Messrs C. W. Carlson, J. Johnson, A. E. Mahon, C. Gatenby, S. Parker and B. H. Parker. Mr. Dudley and his family left for New Plymouth during the week-end but will return before finally leaving for their new farm at Waikato. Mr. A. A. Hammond left on Friday morning by motor for Whangarei for the opening of the shooting season. Mr. J. P. Marx intends to go to Taupo next week for a fishing excursion.- • Mr. L. Schicker has returned after spending a holiday in Auckland and the north. The newly-formed ladies’ Basketball Club has arranged a flag 500 tournament this week-end. It is hoped to raise sufficient funds to give the club a good start in the competitions. As a result of the golf meeting Mr. J. H. Anderson was appointed secretary pro tem. No other officers have been appointed pending examination and report on the ground by experienced players. A meeting will shortly be held to establish the club on a proper footing in the near future. The Mangatoki Hockey Club will play Otakeho on Thursday at .Otakeho.
