SEARCHERS IN RANGES

LARGE PARTY IN TARARUAS

DIFFICULTY OF COMMUNICATION. ' LOCOMOTIVE WHISTLE SIGNALS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, May 1. It will take several days before'all ; the searchers for the four trampers who were lost in the Tararua Ranges can be recalled. About 35 members of tramping clubs are still' in the ranges. The Railway Department has instructed enginedrivers to give three blasts while passing. The whistles are said to be .audible in almost all parts of the ranges.- Altogether 150 have taken part in the search. A prominent tramper to-day stressed the duty of any party in trouble or delayed by bad weather to leave some sort of sign at camp sites for, the guidance of the search parties. Camp, sites, alone were of little use in indicating- the route taken. Search parties had sometimes., to face conditions which normally they would not be called upon to contend with, and in the absence of information left by the missing people they often had to take grave risks which a little consideration would have made unnecessary.
