A GOOD HOCKEY YEAR

MEETING OF TARANAKI DELEGATES

THE PRESIDENT’S REPORT. A good representative gathering of delegates assembled at Eltham on Monday night for the annual meeting of the Taranaki Hockey Association.

Delegates present were Messrs. McKoy and Jackson (Hawera), Thomson and Percy (Egmont), Bridger and Gower (Eltham), V. Betts and R. Grace (Kaponga), W. Cassidy and Good (Tariki), Morgan and McGuinness (Mangatoki), Briant and Bennet (Waitara), Ebbett and Hurwood (Stratford), Johnson and McDowall (Stratford High School), E. Tippetts and Taplin (Tokaora), E. Bennett and Winter (Manaia), Fergus and Davies (Otakeho), Old and Timins (Inglewood), Burrows and Jenkinson (Mahoe) and Ryburn (Referees’ Association). The president, Mr. C. J. McFadyen, presided. In reading his annual report Mr. McFadyen said the past year had been the most successful in the history of Taranaki hockey. He congratulated Taranaki on winning the Nordon Cup after several years of hard struggling. He could not recall a better performance by a Taranaki representative team during the 20 years he had spent in the province. The record was four matches played, four won, 11 goals scored for and one against the team—a wonderful record. Mr. McFadyen congratulated the team not only on winning the cup, but also on beating Wellington soundly, de added congratulations to the Kaponga team on winning the senior championship and regretted Hawera could not field a team for the final. He urged that the provincial final should be alternately in the south and the north, the travelling team to travel on their half-holiday. There was need of every possible as-

■ sistance from all clubs in the coming . season because there would be heavy expenses, and some means must be found to raise funds. The representative matches last year did not bring much profit. More energy would be needed by clubs and members to increase interest in the game. Every club should hold a social or dance and hand the proceeds to the association to form a reserve fund. Representative matches should be played alternately in the north and south. Mr. McFadyen congratulated the Tokaora club on winning the junior championship in its first year of play. Junior matches should start earlier in the season. He congratulated the junior representatives on their success—one draw and one loss, an excellent start for a young team. To the Referees’ Association Mr. McFadyen expressed thanks for valuable support to the game. The question of insurance of players provoked some discussion. Insurance was referred to the management committee to arrange. A grant of £3 2s was voted to Mr. A. V. Nairn, the retiring secretary. Mr. Morgan asked about the protest entered by the Mangatoki club in connection with the match against Waitara and requested that the fee be returned. The request was granted. Mr. McFadyen suggested that if possible senior and junior teams of each club should travel on the same day. It was decided to make this recommendation to the management committee. 4>

Fixtures should commence as early us possible, by April 19 and 20 if it could be arranged, Mr. McFadyen said. Mr. Ryburn urged that the association be instructed to compel each team to play in correct colours. It was agreed to recommend to the reft

ferees’ association that lists of player* in each match with results of matches be made out on printed postcards after each match and posted to the secretary immediately on the conclusion of play. A recommendation was made to the association that a sub-committee of the

1 management committee be set up to J manage the junior competition. r ' ■
