Chinese reports state tnai, Umna is making desperate efforts to recapture Chapgtehfu. There was serious fighting throughout the night of March 8 and the Chinese claim that they drove back th? Japanese a considerable distance, losing 200 men in the process. Attacks are being rnade by night in order to nullify the operations of aeroplanes. The Chinese are sending considerable reinforcements to the vicinity of the Kupeikqw Pa?§, preparing to hold the position ußtir the launching of an offensive under Chiang Kai-shek. The Japanese Legation at Peking is attempting to negotiate for the withdrawal of the Chinese forces in order to prevent further bloodshed and an tension pf hostilities in North China; otherwise the Japanese say they will be ■compelled to send troops through Shanhaikwan to attack the Chinese in the rear. The Japanese announce the operation? will cease when the occupation of Kupeikpw is completed. ' A Tokio message states that complete expulsion of the Chinese from Jehol Is hourly expected. The Japanese legation at Peking , will then negotiate to induce the ivithdrawal of the Chinese troops at present massed south of the Great Wall.
