FIGHT WITH SHARK
NATIVE DIVER ATTACKED. A Torres Strait native, named Tumia, fought a 14-foot shark under the water on a reef at Barrow Point, 100 miles north of Cooktown, Queensland, lately. Tumia was a member of the crew of a cutter which was trochus fishing. The cutter dropped anchor near Barrow Point, and Tumia and two other natives proceeded in a dinghy to dive for shell. Tumia dived into several fathoms of water, and, when coming up, a shark snapped at him when he was two fathoms from the surface. Gobi, one of the dinghy crew, threw a spear at the shark,' which then had hold of Tumia’s arm, and it appeared to release its grip. The shark then made another attack on Tumia, who endeavoured to ward it off with his arm. Before being pulled into the boat, he was bleeding freely from the shoulder and arm. Later he was taken to Cooktown Hospital, after a trip of two days, the delay being due to unfavourable weather.
