DEATH OF MRS. HOWELL
OfjD RESIDENT OF NEW PLYMOUTH. , Mrs. Caroline Adelaide Howell, who died at New Plymouth recently at the age of 75, was formerly Miss Gason • and was bom in Ireland. She arrived in New Zealand at an early age, and lived for a time in the Chatham Islands, where her father was a magistrate. At that time Te Kooti escaped from imprisonment,' and'during the trouble that arose she was sheltered by friendly natives. Later Mrs. Howell went to New Plymouth, where she was married about 56 years ago. Mr. and M rs - Howell farmed at Rahotu till about 1900 when they returned to New Plymouth, where they took over Chatsworth House, now the Y.W.C.A. Hostel.
Mrs. Howell had 12 children, 11 of whom are living. Four sons served in the war, one being killed at Gallipoli. Her daughters are:—Mrs. McLaren, Hawera; Mrs. E. D. Good, Northland; Mrs. David Howden, Pahiatua; Mrs. Ivan Thomson, New Plymouth; Misses Mabel and Grace Howell, New Plymouth. The sons are; Messrs. Norman and Reginald Howell, New Plymouth; Mr. Alfred Howell, Waver ley; Mr. Percy Howell, Hamilton; and Mr. Irwin Howell, Wanganui.
