Mrs. K- C. Akers, who leaves shortly, to live in Wellington, has been guest of honour at several parties this week. The hostesses have been Mrs. lan Roy, Mrs. A. R. Thompson and Mrs. Allom.

Miss Nola Rudd, who has been spending several .weeks here as the guest of Mrs. G. Neal, has returned to Auckland.

Mrs. M. P. Bremer, who has been amending a short holiday here as the guest of Mrs. C. P. Baker, Fitzroy, returned yesterday to Waverley. Mrs. Denny-Brown was hostess at bridge this Week. Miss T. Luxford, Devonport, Auckland, i« at present the guest of Mrs. D. Sykes.

Miss Z. A. Sowry, Church of England missionary stationed in the West Godavery district, India, during the past five years, will leave Sydney by the Maunganui next Thursday for New Plymouth on furlough.

Miss McNeill was hostess at a tennis party last Monday. To celebrate the coming-of-age of Miss Gladys Bogers, a cheery little party was given by Mr. and Mrs. H. Bogers, Whiteley Street, on Saturday night. There were 30 present and a most enjoyable evening was spent in dancing. An enjoyable garden tea was held at Mrs. F. S. Johns’ residence, Standish MjH, on Saturday. The president of the Victoria League (Mrs. A. C. H. Collins) and Mrs. Johns received the guests. The garden was gay with flowers and on the lawns various croquet competitions were held. The winners were Mesdames Gentles, Gray, G. White, P. White and lan Roy, and Misses Hempton and 80110. An enjoyable afternoon was held on Wednesday, at the residence of Mrs. H. V, S. Griffiths, president of the New Plymouth. District Nurse Association, when past and present members of the committee met' to farewell the district nurse, Sister Gill, in view of her approaching marriage, Mrs. F, E. Wilson, who was the founder of the association at New Plymouth, testified to the able manner in which Sister Gill had carried out her arduous duties throughout the six years she had occupied the position. Mrs. Wilson said the committee regretted losing Sister Gill but wished her every future happiness, and she presented a clock with the committee’s best wishes. Mrs. Griffiths also spoke of the good work done always so readily by Sister Gill and of the happiness that Sister had been the means of taking into many sad homes. Mrs. Griffiths asked Sister’s acceptance of a beautiful illuminated address, the handiwork of Mr. Griffiths. A musical programme was rendered by Mrs. Laurie Cooper, Mrs. R. Hawkins and Miss M. CannelL

VICTORIA LEAGUE.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The executive committee of the New Plymouth Victoria League met on Monday. The president, Mrs. A. C. H. Collins, occupied the chair and welcomed members after the. holidays. . . The book committee reported that eifht parcels of books had been sent out since the last meeting, .two being sent to the relief camp at Okato. Eighty books and magazines were enclosed in the Christmas cases sent by the president. Letters of thanks were received from Tangarakau. The president reported that eight Christmas cases had been sent to the backblocks, these containing clothing, toys, books, etc., and many letters of thanks had been received. The house committee reported that during January it had assisted at a garden party at “Maranui” (Mrs. T. C. List’s residence) and at a garden tea in the grounds of the residence of Mrs. F. S. Johns. Arrangements are in hand for the first quarterly “at home.” At this new members will be the guests of the president and cpuficiJ.
