EXPLOSION ON SPEED BOAT

An explosion occurred to-day in a new speed-boat built here for the Fijian Air Force. Walter Kuhl, a mechanic aged 18, was hurled into the air and was rescued practically unharmed. The boat was burned to the water’s edge. Kuhl was beneath the cabin preparing to start the engine for a test trial when, due to the accumulation of petrol fumes, an explosion startled the people on the harbour front. The boat was filled with valuable engines which cost over £lOOO.
