Y.W.C.A. WORK AND IDEALS

MISS J. STEVENSON HONOURED. GARDEN PARTY AT “MARANUI.” Good weather yesterday favoured the garden party arranged by Miss R. List, Mrs. P. C. Davie and a committee of girls in honour of Miss Jean Stevenson, National Secretary of the Y.W.C.A. ( The beautiful grounds of “Maranui,” where the garden party was held, looked their best. A feature of the afternoon was the “Olympic Games,” of teams representing Wanganui Girls’ College, Woodford House, New Plymouth Girls’ High School, lona and Wellington College. The captains of the teams were: lona, Miss R. List; Wanganui, Mrs. S. Grayling; Woodford House, Miss F. Nicholson; New Plymouth Girls’ High School, Miss N. Moyes; Wellington College, Mrs. P. C. Davie. The obstacle race caused great amusement, and was won by the Wanganui team. Other games and competitions were also indulged in, the “wool-gather-ing” being won by Mrs. Middleton. Miss Stevenson made a short speech in which she told something of the work of Women’s Auxiliaries and Girls’ Guilds for the Y.W.C.A. in various centres. One slogan of the Y.W.C.A. fellowship was “From each according to her ability, to each according to her needs,” said Miss Stevenson. It gave the opportunity for different groups to share with each other, and should have a special appeal to those who had the privileges of home, ample social life, education and leisure. There was always the danger of people failing to be aware of those whose life was different from their own. She appealed for help for the Y.W.C.A. of New Plymouth, and for young women to take advantage of it to widen, their horizon, to develop their powers and to serve others. . Special assistance was asked for collections for the girls’ appeal day, and for gifts of produce.
