REPEAL OF PROHIBITION
SENATE ADOPTS MOTION.
PROTECTION OF DRY STATES.
By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Washington, February 16. The Senate to-day adopted Mr. Blaine’s motion for the repeal of the prohibition amendment with protection for dry States from liquor importations and with ratification to be by State conventions. The resolution now goes to the House of Representatives. The Speaker of the House (Mr. John Garner) predicted this morning that if the resolution was adopted by the Senate in the form it was it would be approved by the House under a suspension of the rules on Monday. The Senate vote on the 13-year-old amendment was marked by tension, the floor being crowded by members of the House of Representatives, who stood behind many of the Senators who were seated quietly in their chairs and wearing their names. Before the final vote of 63 to 23 on the motion, on which a two-thirds majority was required, the Senate by decisive majorities rejected one after another attempts by Senators Glass and D. A. Reed to outlaw the saloon in the Constitution.
