TO-DAY’S RACE MEETINGS

LAST DAY AT WANGANUI

GOOD FIELDS IN ALL EVENTS.

PROSPECTS OF GOLDEN WINGS.

(By

“Hurry On.”)

All events have filled well for the concluding day at Wanganui, and there is every prospect of some very interesting racing. There are newcomers in several of the races, and they may upset the first day’s, form. Proceedings commence with the

Tenacre, Invictus and Day Lass did riot race On Thursday,' and of the trio Tenacre is likely to do best. Riotous and Calamine went good races, and the latter appears to be just striking form. Jaysbnj is a possible improver. The mdst favour- j ed may be Calamine, Riotous and Ten- I acre.

Might also claims an engagement in the last event but if started here is sure to be strongly fancied. Wasteland and Arena filled the minor places on Thursday, but the former should again finish in front Of the filly. Arise goes fast but it is doubtful if she can give weight to Welcome Lu, who was most unlucky on the opening day. None of those on the minimum make much appeal. If Might goes to the post he will be favourite, but in his possible absence Welcome Lu and Wasteland will come in for solid support

wayacre » ■> iu.nua , Arisus and View Halloo are class horses and with a little more luck the latter may have won on Thursday. Pomp is improving all the time, and Bayacre should be a lot better for his race in the Tayforth Handicap. Royal Bengal was a shade unlucky in that and should be able to account for Green Linnet and Ganpat. Arvada will probably be reserved for a later event The race is very open, and ever runner will have plenty of supporters, but the actual favourites may be View Halloo, Arisus and Royal Bengal.

High* Falutin’ won really well in the Earle Stakes, and is sure to right up at the finish again. Brambletorn should be all the better for his race on Thursday, while Eminent's consistency will ensure him of plenty of friends. First Acre is not ready but Grand Jury is due any time now. He went a great race on Thursday. Richfield has been disappointing since Stratford, but Shrewd will be in the picture all the way. Ganpat on the minimum has more than an outside chance. This should be a good betting race with High Falutin’, Eminent and Brambletom best supported.

AriMitva o j. This is the smallest field of the day. Navaho was most unlucky on Thursday j as his rider lost both irons at the jump cut. Clangor is improving all the time, and the distance here will be in his favour. Arikitea and Davistock were only ‘ plugging along at the finish and Beaconsfield would have, to improve a ton to have a chance. \ The public will probably pin their faith to Clangor and Navaho. (

There are not many five furlong open events around now, and this face will create a lot of interest. Golden Wings would only have to jump out to nave a royal chance, but he is not too dependable at the post these days. If reserved for this Arisus would carry a lot of support. Royal Routine and Aston led most of the way on Thursday. Both are brilliant out of the tapes. Midinette is speedy and sure to have been improved by her race in the Taranaki Stakes. It is unlikely that both Royal Bengal and Arvada will be started, and the stable will probably rely on the

latter. She would only have to jump out to keep the rest busy. This is a real problem for investors, but Midinette, Golden Wings and Royal Routine should be there all the way. ( .

From the mariner in which he was finishing on at New Plymouth Might would have a royal show if reserved for this. Haulbowline won with a lot in hand oh Thursday, arid despite a good rise in weight, he will prove hard to beat'Peschiera disposed of Nebulae and Bonny Vale so decisively at the finish of the final event that he would appear certain to be able to account for them again here. If reserved it would be hard to go past Might, but should he fail to parade Haulbowline and Peschlera are the form horses. WOODVILLE RACE MEETING. RANGITIKEI MEETING. The Rangitikei Racing Club was originally allotted March 1 and 2 for its, annual meeting this year, but the club has decided to use only one day of its permit, and it has applied for and has been granted March 8 for the meeting. A good programme of seven events has been drawn up, and it should entice satisfactory support. The main event is the Rangitikei Handicap, replacing the Rangitikei Cup, and run over seven furlongs instead of one mile and a quarter. Undoubtedly this move has been made because there are better open short-distance horses about at present than middle-dis-tance horses. The stake is 90 sovs, including plate valued at 15 sovs. There is alsc u Hack Cup, Of 85 sovs (including cutlery valued at 20 sovs), run over seven furlongs. The other events carry stakes of from £5O to £65.

The club, as most other clubs are doing, has decided to operate the popular win-and-place totalisator. Admission charges have been much reduced. Nominations for all events close on Monday, February 20.
