A garden party was held at “Maranui” yesterday afternoon, when about 60 guests assembled to meet Miss Jean Stevenson, National General Secretary of the Y.WjCA. in New Zealand, who briefly spoke of the work of the association in New Zealand. Lawn games were played during the afternoon, and several teams, representing old girls of different schools, competed in games and races. Wanganui College Old Girls proved to be the winners. Tea was served out of doors, and the afternoon concluded with the presentation by Mrs. P. C. Davie of small tokens to the winning team. GENERAL ITEMS. The Rev. Mother Salmond, Mother Superior of the Sacre Coeur of Australasia, arrived from Sydney last week. The Rev. Mother is accompanied by Mother de Kerever. They will visit all the convents of' the order during their visit to New Zealand, and are at present in the South. The death is announced from London of Miss Ada Moore, sister of the famous actresses, Eva and Mary Moore. She was an enthusiatsic feminist and taught singing and elocution. She joined the musicians’ section of the Actresses’ Franchise League and had a speakers’ class at Chelsea. She worked with the Actresses’ Franchise League for the British Women’s Hospital, and by her own unaided efforts raised enough money to endow a room at the Star and Garter home for disabled men. She. organised concerts and entertainments' in England, France and Germany in the hospitals and leave camps,, and gave devoted service to the Women’s Freedom League. Mrs. John Brownlee, who is accompanying her husband on- a world tour, is an Italian countess in her own right. She is a member of one of the oldest families of the nobility in Piedmont, and before her marriage was the Contessa Carla Odonne di Feletti, of Tauria. Always a keen student of the classics, the young contessa was studying French literature at the Sorbonne when she first met Mr. Brownlee, who was also working hard at languages at the same noted University. Although romance sprang into being at once, the engagement was hot announced until Mr. Brownlee had established himself firmly as a star at the Paris Opera, and the marriage was celebrated, some short time afterwards. The American tennis champions left by the Monterey for the United States. They had only the week-end in Auckland, but (they, were able to enjoy the hospitality offered them, because with ast Saturday’s 'test match they completed their playing engagements. Few who have not experienced the strain of an athlete’s tour can realise the relief felt when it is over. The visitors and their wives were entertained at several functions, and the unmarried member, Mr. K. Gledhill, was the principal guest at a party held at Dixieland on Saturday night. ENGAGEMENT.
