RELIEF AT NEW PLYMOUTH
MAYOR’S COMMITTEE MEETING. INVESTIGATION OF THE POSITION. Reports that families were starving at New Plymouth were brought to the notice of a meeting of the executive of the Mayor’s Relief Committee and while it was generally believed that the reports were exaggerated, a special committee was set up to investigate the position immediately and take such action as deemed necessary. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths, chairman), Nurse Petersen, Nurse Cartwright, Father Henley, the Rev. Fordham Clarke and Mr. P. E. Stainton (acting-secretary). Mr. Stainton said Nurse Petersen had been invited to attend to discuss with the executive the question, of arranging for a committee to take charge of special activities that had been associated with the Plunket Society. Nurse Peterson said Mrs. D. Blackley was prepared to act as convener of a committee to take care of the work as outlined by her. It -was resolved that Mrs. Blackley be asked to set up such a committee to be associated with the Mayor’s Relief Committee. Reports were submitted by the pound scheme, clothes drive, Welcome Lodge and relief committtees. It was agreed that each committee, having set out the broad principle of its work, should be responsible for the carrying out of the work in detail. It was resolved that the executive meet on the first Thursday in each month at Welcome Lodge when reports would be submitted by each committee covering its activities. A general meeting of all committee members would be held once a quarter, as by this means it was felt that each member of the committee would be kept in touch with the whole of the work being done and interest maintained and stimulated.
