SPORT MARRED BY WEATHER. (From a Correspondent.) The continued wet weather has practically put a stop to all kinds of outdoor recreation during the week. A few ladder matches in the tennis championships have been played, but this amounts to all that could be done in the way of sport The visit of the Taranaki business men had been looked forward with interest, but their late arrival and consequent curtailment of the local programme upset arrangements. It is hoped the bad weather may prove a blessing in disguise. At any rate it should bring home to the visitors from the west of Taranaki the need for a metalled road. Ohura and New Plymouth are only about three hours apart via Mount Messenger and Ohau. CROQUET GAMES AT ELTHAM. RESULTS OF COMPETITIONS. An honorary members’ day was held by' the Eltham Croquet Club on Wednesday, when the winners were Mrs. E. Clare and Mrs. Weir senr. (honorary members) and Mrs. I. J. Bridger and Miss Thomas (playing .members). Yesterday progressive ; croquet games were played, the winners being: A players, Mrs. E. L. Egarr; B players, Mrs. A. R. Gower. The play during the competitions attained an excellent standard. COUNTRY CRICKET MATCH. FRASER ROAD BEAT MANGAMINGI. Fraser Road beat Mangamingi by 85 to 67 in a cricket match at Eltham yesterday. S. Death and Pullen shared the Mangamingi wickets, the best scores being P. Hickey’s 11, E. Woodley’s 9, C. West’s 9 and L. Barnard’s 8. Bird’s 14 was the best score for Fraser Road, other double figures being S. Death’s 12 and Palmer’s 12. Hickey, Jones and West were the most successful bowlers. x — — > DAIRY FACTORY BURGLED. TEN POUNDS OF BUTTER TAKEN. When the York Road dairy factory was opened yesterday morning it was found that during the night 101 b. of butter had been taken. When employees left the factory on Wednesday evening a 401 b. box of butter was left on the landing, which is enclosed by a sliding doqr. There was sufficient play in the door to enable a man man to put his aim between the door and the post and that was the method adopted by the thief, who was able to reach the box. AMATEUR ATHLETICS. STRATFORD CLUB’S MEETING. The Stratford Amateur Athletic Club held a meeting in Victoria Park last night, results being:— 75 yards handicap: F. Young (3yds) 1, J. Whiting (syds) 2, R. B. Boys’ walk: W. Ansley 1, J. A. Cowell 2. W. Foley 3. Relay race: Field events team 1, runners’ team 2. GENERAL ITEMS. Temporary Flaw in Water Supply. The piling up of leaves and debris at the mouth of the intake pipe which, draws Stratford’s water supply caused a temporary stoppage yesterday morning. The collection is accounted for by the recent heavy rainfall which has considerably swollen the river, thus causing an accumulation of rubbish. Borough workmen under the supervision of the engineer (Mr. L. B. Davis) experienced no difficulty in remedying the fault, and within 2} hours the supply was again functioning.

Eltham Nursing Classes. The Eltham home-nursing classes commenced this week with an attendance of 20 pupils. Nurse Small is in charge of the instruction. Tennis Club Dance. St. Joseph’s Tennis Club held a attended dance in the Eltham Parish Hall on Wednesday. The chief Monte Carlo dance was won by Mr. J. England and Mrs. Egarr, Hawera, and other Monte Carlo dances were won by Mr. J. Gribble and Mrs. Egarr, Mr. L. Tipler and Miss A. Foote, Mr. Taylor and Miss Martin. The music was played by Mr. Jack Hooker, with extras by Mr. J. Sheehy, Miss N. Sheehy and Mr. V. Henry.
