HOME GARDEN CONTEST JUDGED. PRIMARY CHILDREN COMPETE. The gardens of pupils of the Stratford primary school who competed in the home garden competition have all been judged. Owen Masters won the senior vegetable garden competition, Eljean Aitken the senior flower and John Tunnicliff the junior vegetable. The gardens were judged in three sections —senior vegetable plots, senior flower plots and junior vegetable plots, Standards 3 and 4 comprising the junior section. Marks were awarded under the following headings: Preparation and finish 20 marks, variety and arrangement 20, cultivation and spacing 25, growth and appearance 20 and note books 15, making a total of 100. Some very fine gardens were seen. Owing, however, to the lateness of the judging a good deal of the produce had been used from some gardens, but in most cases replanting had been done. Some of the plots were very large, being thre or four times the usual size, the owners of these displaying unusual energy for schoolboys. The three flower gardens were very fine and reflected great credit on the girls concerned. As an encouragement to these youthful gardeners a non-competitive exhibition of garden produce and flowers is to be held at the school on Tuesday, when a good display is expected. Results of the judging are:— Vegetables, senior: Owen Masters 92, John Gordon 83, Dorothy Nowell 83, Hugh Thomson 82, Beresford Whyte 78, William Russ 78, Allan Pettigrew 73, Neville Turnbull 72, Laurie Reader 72, Eric Brown 67, Percy Vincent 66, Harry Paine 60.

Flowers, senior: Eljean Aitken 87, Dorothy Nowell 85, Thelma Cranton 84, Vegetables, junior: John Tunnicliff 87, Hector Whyte 84, Noreen Foley 81, Vernon Collins 80, Rosina Dennis 80, Ron Rowe 77, Ronald Brown 64. Several dual plots were inspected, but it was not thought fair to include them in the general competition. A number of competitors lost marks through having lost or mislaid their notes.
