NO STARVATION FOUND

POSITION AT NEW PLYMOUTH. INVESTIGATIONS BY THE MAYOR.' That there were cases of starvation at New Plymouth was denied yesterday by the Mayor (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths) .following investigation of the reports circulated at Tuesday’s meeting of the North Taranaki employment committee,, and published in Wednesday’s Daily News. “Each instance of reported undue hardship was carefully investigated by a committee comprising Father Henley, Nurse Petersen and myself,” states Mr. Griffiths. “In no instance did we find conditions as reported, and most of the people concerned have actually been receiving assistance. There is. absolutely no need' for people to starve in New Plymouth. Assistance is readily available and any cases of undue hardship reported to the right quarters will be immediately attended to. The whole thing, is a mere ‘mare’s nest’ and without any foundation in fact.” , , u A further rumour circulated that there have been repeated thefts of children’s lunches at one at least of-the New Plymouth schools is given a flat denial by the headmaster of the school concerned. Not one case of theft has been reported to him, he states.
