NOTES ON THE RACING

HIGH FALUTIN’ IN FORM ’ . A REWARD FOR CONSISTENCY. CALAMINE’S GAME FINISH. Calamine improved on her showings at Hawera and New Ply.mouth when she scored a clear-cut win in the Westmere Hurdles. She. was rushed up .to the front six furlongs from home but was then allowed to have a breather, with the result that she finished on in good style. ■ Riotous. had every chance and seemed' to be going very easily at the far bend, but Miles was having to keep him going before the' straight was reached. Jayson was running on at the finish without ever looking like a winner. His maimers at the barrier have improved. Marjoram ran really well as long as his condition lasted. Easterly was going very well five furlongs from home when she hit a fence very badly and lost much ground. Diatomous Just Wins. Diatomous received a fine jump out as the Japes went up in the Juvenile, and the ’advantage' he gained just won the race for' him. He was tiring at the finish. Roy Reed rode a splendid race on Wasteland. He reserved his effort until the leader commenced to stop, and then pounced on him, but the post was reached just too soon for him. Arena was always handy t 6 finish a good third. Welcome Lu was responsible for a good performance to be in fourth 'place at the ehd, as she was left four or five lengths at the start and had to go. right round the field. Wharaurangi and Boon showed pace but faded out at the end. Tayforth to Green Linnet. Green Linnet usually runs her best races when opposed to small fields, and she confirmed her New Plymouth- showing by winning the Tayforth Handicap in good style. She went after the leaders soon after. passing the' half-mile and had the race won soon after turning for home. Royal Bengal seemed a shade unlucky in being kept rather too far back approaching the straight entrance. Ganpat was not good enough, but Bayacre, having his first race for some months, ran really well and was right up at the finish. High Falutin’s Great Run. High Falutin’s win in the Earle Stakes did not come out of its turn as this son of Grandcourt had had three seconds and a third in hi? four previous starts. The small field enabled his rider to keep within striking distance of the leaders, and then to make full use of his strong finishing run. Though only a neck in front at the finish his win was clearcut and he would have been most unlucky to get beaten. Eminent ran right up to his Taranaki form and only just failed'' to hold off the winner after being one of the leaders all the way. Shrewd as usual attempted to win all the way, and half-way down the straight appeared likely to see it out, but he weakened over the last fifty yards. Considering that he has done practically no work since New Plymouth, Brambletorn ran a good race, but. was under pressure before he turned for home. Grand Jury was well in the'' picture until the top of the, straight, when his condition gave out. Old First Acre, looking big and lusty, was with the leaders for six furlongs, but then dropped back quickly. Morrath in Easy Style. On the strength of a good trial at 'Awapuni Morrath was a quiet tip for the Victory Hack, and the half-sister to Puithair scored a decisive win. She reached- the front five furlongs from home and, galloping in a bold fashion, never looked in danger of defeat. Davistock had a good passage on the rails all the way, and though he finished well had no chance with the winner. Arikitea covered a lot of ground in a fivehorse rate and did not finish as well as usual. Navaho was going well when his rider lost a stirrup and had to be pulled up. Beaconsfield was finished with half a mile from home. All in a Line. . The Flying produced one of the finest finishes seen on the course for a long time, the whole field passing the post almost- in line. Arisus was always in a handy position, but. had to come round three horses at the home turn. Pomp was never further back than third and looked a winner at the distance. Aston and Royal Routine both ran on gamely after making all the early pace. Arvada was unlucky as she was last half a mile from home but came home in good style. View Halloo made a great run on the rails in the straight, but could not get through. Hunt the Slipper was always in the picture and was close up at the finish. It was a wonderful finish, but Arisus won on his merits. A length would have covered the whole field at the finish. Haulbowline Runs On. Haulbowline showed all his customary brilliance in the early stages and then more than held his own in the run to the post. Until recently he has been leased by the New Plymouth trainer R. Johnson, who handed him back to his owner, G. W. New, after his failures at Trentham. Clangor beat the rest very easily. Peschiera was well back early and was rather unlucky at the straight entrance. He was running on strongly at thb finish. Nebulae, a good favourite, had every chance but was not good enough. Gold Gleam jumped out well but started to drift after passing the three furlongs. ... \
