WANGANUI RACES

HIGH FALUTIN’S STAKES GREAT FINISH IN FLYING ARISUS’ NARROW VICTORY “ JUVENILE TO DIATOMOUS ? The autumn meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club opened yesterday in splendid. weather before a fair attendance of the public. The track was fast and the racing excellent. The win and place system of betting was in vogue, but the investments fell from £6799 for the corresponding day /. last year to £5922. Following are the results:— WESTMERE HURDLES. Of £lOO. One mile four and a-quarter furlongs. 4- CALAMINE, Messrs. Startup Bros.’ b.m., aged, by Callaghan— Decima, 9.4 (L. Dtilieu) 1 * 1-1-RIOTOUS, 10.0 (R. C. Miles) .... 2 3- JAYSON, 10.13 (J. Mcßae) 3 Also started: 2-2 Easterly, 11.10; 5-5 Marjoram, 9.0. Won by a length and a-half, three lertgths between second and third. Time, 2m. 50 4-ss. Winner trained by M. Conway, Hawera. From a good start Marjoram and Riotous soon hit the front from Calamine, Jayson and Easterly, but passing the stands Riotous had taken command and was a length and a-half in front of . Marjoram, with a gap of three lengths to Jayson, Easterly and Calamine, The last-named was then rushed to the front and led into the back stretch from Riot- , ous, Marjoram, Jayson and Easterly. Riotous was again in charge passing the three furlongs, but Calamine was with him again at the straight entrance, two lengths in front of Marjoram and Jayson. The two leaders had a good setto in the run home, Calamine drawing out over the last 50 yards to win by a length and a-half. Jayson was a fair .third and Marjoram was fourth. JUVENILE HANDICAP. Of £75. Five furlongs. V ■ l-l-DIATOMOUS, M. Millar’s br.c., 2yrs, by Diacquenod—Spangle, 9.3 (E. A. Keesing) 1 2-3—WASTELAND, 8.6 (R. Reed) .... 2 5- ARENA, 8.9 (T. Cribb) 3 Also started: 3-2 Welcome Lu, 7.7; 6-6 Boon, 7.3; 7-7 Wharaurangi, 7.2; 4-5 Hard Forrard, 7.0. Won by half a head, two and a-half lengths between second and third. Time, /. Im. 1 4-ss. Winner trained by A. E. Neale, Bulls. The despatch was not a good one, Welcome Lu and Hard Forrard losing their chances as the tapes went up. Diatomous was the quickest to begin and was soon showing the way to Wasteland, Wharaurangi, Boon and Arena, and they raced out of the back stretch in that order. Wharaurangi then started to fall , ( ; back and Arena moved into third place. Diatomous was clear of Wasteland as they turned for home with Arena next, and half-way down the straight looked like winning comfortably, but then he commenced to tire and Wasteland, finishing strongly, just failed to reach, him by half a head. Arena was a good third and then came Welcome Lu, Boon, Hard Forrard and Wharaurangi. TAYFORTH HANDICAP. A sweepstake of £3 with £lOO added. Seven and a-quarter furlongs. 2— GREEN LINNET, J. Passing the three furlongs Green Linnet moved up a little. ? Rounding, the turn for home Ganpat was just showing out in. front of Bayacre, with Green Linnet coming fast. She had the measure of the leaders at the distance but had to be ridden out to stall off Royal Bengal, who had come with a great run from the turn. Ganpat was a length away, just in front of Bayacre.
