OKOKE DISTRICT NEWS

MORE BUTTER-FAT—AND WEEDS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A working bee consisting of settlers met at Okoke last Saturday and erected on a site alongside the hall, a new combined post office and residence for Mrs. Fraser, the postmistress. The building, which had been manufactured in sections, was completed in four hours. Mr. T. Hoskin was the successful tenderer for the Okoke school conveyance contract and commenced his duties on February 1. This season’s production of butter-fat in this valley has eclipsed all previous years’ output, and the only fly in the ointment is the fact that although production has been increased the prices have receded to unprecedented levels. As the result of copious raids there is abundant feed, and most Okoke farmers have this year saved more hay and ensilage than in the past. The weather experienced this year has certainly suited the growing of noxious weeds, more particularly ragwort, whid} is getting beyond control in some places. Most farmers state that even with the assistance of sodium the weeds have increased twofold this season, while blackberry is thriving, especially where it can secure rough cover, such as, tl-tree.

The Okoke cricket team visited Urenui during the week-end and played a friendly match, which was frequently marred by heavy showers. Okoke winning the toss batted first and compiled a modest 45. Urenui required Only two runs to pass Okoke’s total when the match had to be abandoned owing to rain.
