AWAKING WOMEN’S DIVISION

MISS ANDREWS’ TALK ON PEACE. The Mokau-Awakino branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union celebrated its first birthday in the Mokau Hall on Saturday. A large number of visitors was present from other branches. The afternoon opened with an amusing competition which was won by Mrs. Fuller, Tongaporutu. The following musical programme, which was arranged by Mrs. E. L. Black, was much appreciated: Pianoforte solo, “Dreaming” (Schumann), Miss Iris Rowe; song and chorus, “I’m Just a Dancing Sweetheart,” Misses Ida Hansen, Marion Condon, Iris Rowe and Nellie Hammond; song, “Sunshine and Rain,” Mrs. J. The tables were decorated with scralet gerberas. Pride of place was given to the birthday cake with its one candle. The president (Mrs. W. D. Black) welcomed the. visitors, and gave a brief outline of the activities of the branch during the year. The success of the year’s working was due in a great measure to the secretary (Miss Eric Lewes). Miss ,Elsie Andrews, New Plymouth, addressed the members on “Peace.” Peace, was the one subject most deservi ing of attention in the world to-day. i Miss Andrews stressed the responsibility . resting on the individual. Women had '. a special contribution to make. The speaker stressed the sense of thrift inherent in woman and how that sense was outraged by the dreadful cost of war, the wanton destruction of property. , War outraged woman’s sense of dignity because of the useless destruction of human life. The ideal of peace was not pacifity but a continual struggle to better the conditions of mankind.
