Arrangements for "teaching the school children of Hawera and surrounding districts are in full operation at the Hawera municipal baths under the supervision of Mr. J. Dowdle, caretaker of the baths. All the schools nearby have set apart their own weekly hours of attendance during which instruction is given to non-swimmers on Mr. Dowdle’s teaching device. In view of the adequate scheme already in operation the Hawera Swimming Club has decided it could do little more by holding any one week as a “Learn to Swim” week and will, instead, co-operate with Mr. Dowdle in accordance with his present time-table by assisting in. the actual coaching at the baths. At present the schools attend as follow: — Monday and ‘Thursday: Noon to 1 p.m., High School and Convent boys; 3 to 4 p.m., Main School and Tawhiti School boys. Tuesday and Thursday: Noon to. 1 p.m., High School and Convent girls; 3 to 4 p.m., Main School and Tawhiti School girls. Wednesday: 10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m., Ohangai School; 11,30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., Mokoia School; 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m., Normanby School. Arrangements are being made as soon as- possible to fit in times for Whareroa and Tokaora schools. Messrs Gilliver and A. W. Lawn, of the Hawera Main School, are holding instruction classes in life-saving for the Math and Tawhiti Schools on their respective. days. Mr. W. J. Claringbold has offered his services and will be helping in the coaching of High School pupils. OKAIAWA MISSION FAIR.’ HONOURED PIONEER PRESENT. At the official opening of the Maori Mission Fan. - at the Okaiawa Harvest Festival last week appreciation was expressed of the mission work of Mrs. J. Williams (Sister Nellie), who did so much of the pioneering work in . the •district, and whose “sowing” the community, is harvesting at the present time. Mrs. Williams was present at the gathering by invitation, and was invited to speak, which was particularly appropriate in view of the fact that it was the first Maori Mission harvest festival held at Okaiawa. She welcomed all present, particularly many old people whose faces she knew intimately, and said that though she was now seldom seen by the Maori people of Okaiawa she had not forgotten. them. She expressed her great pleasure at being present at such a function, and hoped it would be the forerunner of many similar festivals. She congratulated ;the : Maori: people responsible for the decorations and management of the stalls. The address was .most appropriate to the occasions, and was much appreciated by the listeners. The Rev. P. Rakena presided, and the function was opened with a Maori hymn and prayer. •
