“HIGH EXCHANGE AND SALES TAX.”

NO NEED TO WORRY’ YET. HOW TO AVOID ITS EFFECTS. There is no doubt that the raising of the Exchange and then the imposition of the Sales Tax has given the purchasing public much food for thought. Everyone will hope that it will have the desired effect of improving the general conditions of the country, though many doubt it. The problem of the moment is how.to adjust the various phases of business to meet the situation.

It is really difficult to know just what to do until the position is generally investigated and understood. For instance, all goods arriving from abroad and all goods purchased, by retailers (not in the exempted classes) will be carrying the increased charges. Also all goods manufactured by retailing firms will have to pay the Sales Tax when put into stock. “The whole subject is more complicated than one imagines at first sight, and requires very careful consideration,” said Mr; P. Higginbottom, Managing Director of Purser’s Ltd., to one of our staff when asked his opinion. “We had made certain provisions for the Exchange by providing funds in London, and heavy purchases recently will partly offset the Sales Tax for the moment. One thing certain, however, is that all replacements must bear the Sales Tax immediately they are put into stock. We are just preparing for our Annual Sale, and we intend to give the public a chance to purchase all. oui- present stocks at REDUCED PRICES, instead of increases.

This is a wonderful opportunity to purchase good quality Furniture and Furnishings at low prices, and we feel the response will pay us for our action.”— Purser’s Ltd.
