After a long agitation France has a Habeas Corpus Act. Hitherto anyone accused of crime could be imprisoned indefinitely during the examining magistrate’s investigation, and without redress if eventually acquitted. The neto Act giving wider discretionary powers to magistrates was. promulgated to-day and has already been responsible for the release of 500 accused persons.- Henceforward accused persons must within five days of the hearing be granted provisional liberty, provided they were previously of good character and are not believed to be likely to. abscond,
