AERO CLUB DANCE

SOUTHERN CROSS AT AUCKLAND. PILOT AND CREW HONOURED. The famous pilot, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, together with his associates on his recent flight across the Tasman in the monoplane Southern Cross, was the guest of honour at a largely-attended ball held by the Auckland Aero Club in the Peter Pan Cabaret on Monday evening. The ballroom was thronged with dancers, who attended to pay honour to the famous pilot and his gallant crew, and on the arrival of the guests in the ballroom the rousing chorus “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” was played with enthusiasm by the. orchestra. In spite of the hot night dancing was made thoroughly enjoyable, a cool breeze being provided by electric fans, while huge blocks of ice were placed at intervals round the ballroom in gaily decorated tubs—a thoughtful innovation which received its full merit of appreciation from the dancers. The supper room was attractively decorated with tall stands of tiger lilies and lower bowls of dahlias, and the repast of iced summer delicacies which was here dispensed was another welcome feature of the occasion. On arrival Sir Charles and his associates, who comprised Mr. J. W. Stannage, Mr. Wilfred Kingsford Smith, Mr. S. E. Neilson, New Plymouth, and Mr. J. Percival, Sydney, were received by Mr. E. R. Boucher, president of the Auckland Aero Club, and Mrs. Boucher; the Rev. C. G. Scrimgeour, captain of the club, and Mrs. Scrimgeour; and Mr. R. Spencer Mason, past president of the club, and Mrs. Mason. An original musical composition of the cabaret band leader, entitled “The Tasman Hop,” was played after the arrival of the official party.
