CENTURY IN CRICKET. MATCH. MATIERE CAPTAIN CARRIES BAT. The Matiere cricket team went to Ohura in the week-end and defeated the local eleven. Rain fell in the early morning but the later part o- the day was fine and sunny. Ohura batted first for 121 runs, and Matiere replied, with 229 runs. Chaytor, Otangiwai. Mrs. M. McAvady, Matiere, is spending a short holiday at Auckland. Mrs. and Mrs. Stein, of the Matiere school, have returned to Matiere after spending their vacation at Auckland. Mr. H. T. Sfftham, Auckland, has arrived at Matiere on transfer to fill the Vacancy in the local branch Of the Bank of New South Wales. Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Sowry, Kaponga, are spending a portion of their vacation Mr. G. P. Rutherford, of the Bank of New South Wales, New Plymouth, is spending his vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Rutherford, Otangiwai. Messrs. F. A. and E. C. Carter, Grange Road, Mt. Eden, are spending a short holiday with Mr. W. A. Carter, Otangiwai. Mrs. M. A. Morgan, Matiere, has returned form a short visit to Auckland. Mrs. J. Brigstrum, Palmerston North, is spending a holiday. with Mr. and Mrs. Agate, Matiere. Mr. J. Cranston, who has been spending his vacation with friends at Otangiwai, has returned to Feilding. Mr. J. Curtayne has been spending his holidays with friends at Matiere and Niho Niho. Mrs. Fullerton-Smith and family ...are spending a fortnight’s holiday at' the' Otaki beach. . Mr. C. D. Margaii .has returned - to; Matiere • from a holiday at Auckland. Mrs. M, A. Morgan, Matiere, entertained a number of friends at her residence on the evening ,of January .10. Games, competitions, dancing and musi- ; cal items made pleasant, entertainment. Mrs. Edwards, Wanganui,', and Mr. Alf Margan were winners of the cqmpeti-' tionS. - FAREWELL PRESENTATION- 1 DEPARTURE OF BANK OFFICER..' A farewell social was tendered to Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Mackley in the Matiere hall on Saturday and a large numbet of friends congregated to spend the evening with them and to wish them goodbye and good luck. Mr. Mackley has been transferred to the Bank of New South Wales, Courtenay Place, Wellington. During the evening songs were sung by Mesdames H. Stoddard and A. S. Taylor and Mr. Wiggins. Music was played for. the dancing by Mesdames Stoddard, Agate and McGovern, while Mr. E. Agate was master of ceremonies. After supper Mr. F. Pleasants on behalf of all their friends made Mr. and Mrs. Mackley a present of a cheque and said, how pleased he was to see such a large crowd of friends gathered together in their honour. He said the present was a small token, of the great esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. Mackley were held by the people of the district. Mt. Mackley had been here only two years but in that time he had become very popular, and Mr. and Mrs. Mackley would be remembered by their friends in Matiere. He joined with all those present in wishing both Mr. and Mrs. Mackley all joy and prosperity in their new home. After Messrs. H. Wiggins, H. Stoddard and H. Gibson had endorsed- and supplemented Mr. Pleasant’s remarks and Wished the departing couple all good Wishes, Mr. Mackley, in responding on behalf of himself and his wife, thanked the speakers for their kind wishes and generous present, and said how sorry they would both be in losing such kind friends. Dancing continued until midnight.
