TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

PLAY BEGUN AT WELLINGTON FERKINS BUNS CHAMPION CLOSE. LONG STRUGGLE IN FOURTH SET. A. WALLACE PLAYS GREAT GAME. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. After yesterday’s rain, which caused a postponement in the New Zealand lawn tennis championships soon after midday the weather to-day broke fine but with a strong northerly wind. This, however, died down by 2 o’clock and conditions were then ideal. In the men’s singles R. McL. Ferkins only surrendered to C. Angas, the champion, at 13—11 in the fourth set after having points for a 4—2 lead and several set points. Angas won on superior condition and because Ferkins could not win on the openings he had created by excellent volleying. The surprise of the day was the defeat of Mrs. W. J. Melody by Mrs. Rudkin in a long base line duel in which Miss Rudkin was down 2—5 in the third set. A brilliant performance was put up by the veteran, Alec. Wallace, and the lefthander George Pearce, a scratch pair, to take the France brothers to 7—5 in the fifth set, the failing light being all against Wallace. With Edgar Bartleet the only one among the Dominion’s ranked players not competing, it was not surprising that high class tennis was seen to-day. Smyth, aaginst Don France, showed he still retains his wonderful forehand drive, but he lacked condition to chase France's sharp-angled vollies. The umpiring probably robbed him of the third set. The match between Ferkins and Angas was the most brilliant of the day, Ferkins having several points for a 5—2 lead in the fourth set and several set points before losing it for the match at 13—11. His volleying, without being severe enough, was remarkable for its accuracy and angles. More speed would have allowed him to place the ball out of Angas’ reach. In the first set Ferkins drove brilliantly past Angas, who ’ stormed the net. In the next two sets Angas played more cautiously, angling Ferkins out of position before going to the net to finish with a volley. The running about forced Ferkins into nets. In the fourth set he placed with the greatest accuracy, principally to Angas’ backhand comer, and took the net, where he seldom inissed a volley. As Angas was fit and moved quickly several brilliant exchanges ensued. After Angas drew level at 5-all each had turns at holding the odd game, but failed to hold the service against the wind. As the match progressed Angas was seen to be fitter and in the last two games he forced the pace from the net to keep Ferkins defending desperately on the back line.

Throughout the match Angas was netting often from the forehand comer and sending the ball out over the side-line with a backhand volley as Ferkins went to the net. He won because of his greater steadiness, with the ability to force the pace in a crisis. RHODES-WILLIAMS OUTPACES. After dropping the first set through being outplayed by Len France’s cuts and drop shots T. Rhodes-Williams just placed the ball where and how he liked, the Wellington man showing little inclination to move for it. If he did then Rhodes-Williams quietly outplaced him either from the backline or the het. Robinson played half-court stuff to Sturt and so was outclassed by fast drives to the corners. Robinson played more like an ordinary club player than a Wilding Shield representative in a steady base line game punctuated by occasional sorties to the net. Eric Roussell was much too steady for Robertson, who netted monotonously. He played much below form.

Stedman, Andrews, Malfroy, Wilson and Court all had easy victories, except that E. A. Pearce volleyed, served, drove and smashed confidently against Malfroy and forced the advantage set. The surprise of the ladies was the defeat of Mrs. W. J. Melody by Miss M. Rutherford in a close-fought base-lino game in which the winner handled Mrs. Melody’s cut-drive and the wind with great tenacity. She was made to run miles but her marvellous returns upset Mrs. Melody’s confidence. Although down 2—5 'in the third set Miss Rutherford never ceased to try and at 5-all Mrs. Melody appeared to be tiring and missing deep drives to her backhand.

Miss Dulcie Nicholls outdrove the steady Mrs. France, who was not able to get the ball much beyond the halfcourt Profiting by Miss Andrew’s numerous mistakes on easy balls Miss Glenny forced the Christchurch player to a long first set in a base-line game. In the second set Miss Andrew came on to her game and outdrove Miss Glenny and won numerous points from the net. Mrs. H. M. Dykes gave Miss J. Ramsay no chance to play her cut strokes. She drove deep to the comers and volleyed any return to the opposite comer. Miss Ramsay was quite outclassed. Miss M. Whyte pursued tactics to bring Miss Macfarlane from the back line and by steady play down the mid-court nearly took the first set.' In the second set Miss Whyte lost accuracy and what balls Miss Whyte did not net Miss Macfarlane drove hard to the comers and outplayed the Wellingtonian. Miss Thelma Poole beat Miss Howell in a base line driving game in which she hit harder and in the second set was also more accurate. In the first set Miss Howell was down love-4 and a bad decision later lost her the chance of a 5—4 lead. Detailed results are:— Men’s Singles. First round: E. B. W. Smyth (Marlborough) beat G. P.
