PERSONAL AND GENERAL. The tennis match arranged against Kaimata had to be abandoned owing to the heavy rain at Kaimata last Saturday and will be concluded next Saturday. New Plymouth Railways have challenged Tariki for a game at the week-end also. Mr. L. Williams (stationmaster) was the guest of the bowlers in the Tariki hall on the eve of his departure for Palmerston North, and he was presented with a tobacco pouch as a mark of esteem. Several bowlers wished Mr. and Mrs. Williams and family good luck in the future. Mr. C. J. Bransell (Mr. Williams’ successor) arrived by the mail train last night from Palmerston North. Miss M. Cassidy has returned from a visit to Auckland. Mrs. and Miss Anderson, Midhirst, have been visiting Mrs. E. Jones. Mr. L. Howes, assistant stationmaster, has received word of transfer (on relief) to Whangamomona and expects to leave early in February. Mr. and Mrs. W. Owen Jones and the Misses Oliven and Bronwen Jones have returned to New Plymouth after spending a few days with Mr. Jones’ mother, Mrs. E. Jones.

Mrs. Evans, Tariki Road, has returned from Hawera.

Mr. L. Williams and family left by car on Tuesday for Wanganui en route to Palmerston North to take up his new duties in the railways. The Tariki Hall Committee has arranged to hold a re-opening dance on January 24. The extensive alterations and additions are completed. Particulars are advertised.

Whooping cough has made its appearance in the district, several adults having contracted the malady.

Several Tariki residents made the journey to New Plymouth to see the Southern Cross, one enthusiast making the trip in the smaller plane. The Inglewod circuit quarterly meeting of the Methodist Church was held recently at the Tariki Methodist Church, when there were present the following visiting representatives: The Rev. Utting (chairman), Messrs. Surrey senr., and D. Wright (circuit stewards), A. J. Reeve and A. Surrey, Mesdames Longbottom, Hobbs, Wright, Mackinder and Miss L. Roberts. Local representatives were Messrs. W. L. Jemison, Griffith and Ed-, ward Jones. Miss Roberts and Mr. Allan, Surrey, were successful in passing their local preachers’ examinations. Sunday school reports were given by Mrs. Pollard (Inglewood) and Mr. G. Jones (Tariki). GENERAL ITEMS. Railway Ganger Injured. A fractured finger was suffered by.a workman engaged in the laying of new railway points north of Regan Street early yesterday morning when one of the jacks slipped. Another ganger suffered a minor injury. Douglas Credits Scheme. An address on the Douglas credits system was given by Dr. G. R. Smith, F.R.C.S., Hokianga, in the parish hall, Stratford, last night before a large and interested audience. After the meeting a study circle was formed and the following officers were appointed: President, Mr. N. H. Moss; secretary, Mr, C. R. Hart; committee, Messrs. R. Watson, E. J. Blick and F. A. Clark. PERSONAL ITEMS. ■ Mr. W. Birss, headmaster of the Cornwall Park School, Auckland, and honorary consul for Ecuador, is the guest of Mr. W. H. Tunnicliff, Stratford. Mr. E. H. Linnell, who was operated on this week for appendicitis, is making satisfactory progress. The position of office junior for the Eltham Borough Council has been gained by Miss Una Mitchell. There were seven applications. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. The following certificates have been received from the National Piping and Dancing Association by Mr. W. F, Ross, secretary of the Taranaki Provincial Caledonian Sports Association, for competition at the meeting to be held at Stratford next Thursday: Sword dance championship of New Zealand for girls of 16 or over; the Highland fling, North Island championship; the Strathpsey and reel for all-comers.'
