SPECTACULAR COLLISION

CINDER TRACK RIDERS INJURED ACCIDENT AT WESTERN SPRINGS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night.

A spectacular collision between two cinder track machines resulted in both riders being thrown heavily and rendered unconscious at Western Springs speedway last evening. One of the riders, R. Cairns, a married man aged 34, was later admitted to the Auckland Hospital suffering from a slight concussion and a fracture of the collarbone, while the other, F. Day, escaped more lightly and competed later in the evening. The accident occurred at the conclusion of the fourth heat of the January Handicap. The winner, D. Mattson, and the second man, T. Stevenson, had already passed the post when Cairns and Day were coming out of the last corner. Just before crossing the line Cairns, who was running last, accidentally touched the rear wheel of Day’s machine with his own mount, and in an instant both machines turned over. The two riders fell heavily, both lying unconscious on the track immediately in front of the judge’s box. The injured riders were attended by members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade on duty at the speedway, but it was some time before either regained his senses. Day was the first to recover but Cairns was not helped to his feet for over five minutes.
