THE RACING DESCRIBED

SMALL FIELD IN HURDLES

MANLY RUNS HIS LAST RACE. WELCOME BOY TAKES THE FIRST. The withdrawal of Emancipation in the Hurdles saw the* field reduced to onedividend dimensions. The public sent Easterly out a good favourite but she had to lower her colours to’the* consistent Welcome Boy. From a beautiful start the whole quartette raced in line for almost a furlong, when Manly showed out from Welcome Boy, with Easterly and St. Ames next. The order was unchanged at tfie first fence in the straight, where Manly injured his fetlock and dropped back.? st. Ames took up the running passing the stands from Welcome Boy and Easterly, who made a bad jump. Manly was dropping right back. Passing the five furlongs Welcome ,Boy again assuiried command from St. Ames and Easterly, the trio being bunched. They raced in this order into the straight, where Welcome Boy drew away to win by three lengths from the hard ridden Easterly, St, Ames was a poor third six lengths further back. Thompson rode a perfect race on Welcome Boy, never covering a yard of unnecessary ground, and the horse’s fine fencing stood him in good stead. Easterly made one or two bad jumps, otherwise she might have been closer. St. Ames was well done with at the top of the straight, while Manly broke a fetlock and had to be destroyed. ROYAL PAPA WINS NARROWLY. British Columbia absolutely refused to face the barrier in the Cardiff Maiden and the field had to be sent away without him. Royal Papa was the quickest to begin but Rita’s Light soon ran up to him and the pair led from Sir Musk with Chief Line and Kind Words next when they had settled down. There was no change in positions until the entrance to the straight, where Royal Papa was still shoeing the way to Rita’s Light, Sir Musk and Chief Line. Rita’s Light was the first to tackle the leader, but no sooner had he shaken her off than Sir Musk and Chief Line made their efforts. In a fine finish Sir Musk just failed to reach Royal Papa by a head. Chief Light was ,a length away and Rita’s Light was fourth. Then came Kind Words and Icier. ■_ Royal Papa was better suited by the higher scale of. weights than in the Juvenile on Monday, and jumping out smartly was in front all the way. He is improving all the time and should do even better before the season closes. Sir Musk kept up his record for consistency and recorded his third successive second. He was’ unluncky as liis rider lost ap iron in the straight. Chief Line was not well placed in the early stages but made a good effort in the straight. He looked likely at the distance but did not run on as well as expected. Rita’s Light again displayed pace but the weight found her out.REFRESHER ALL THE WAY.

The. publjc would have nothing but Paganelli and ' Tigerism in the Malone Memorial, but both were beaten out of a place in a field of six. . Tigerism was first ip move but he was immediately steadied- and Refresher led out of the straight from Paganelli, with Gibraltar, Monaloff, Tigerism and Richfield following. Passing the half mile Refresher increased the pace and the field became more strung out, though there was no alteration in the order- Refresher and Pagpnelli were on terms at' the home turn just in front of Gibraltar with Richfield coming fast on the outside. Paganelli was soon done with and Refresher went on to win by a length and a half from Gibraltar, with Richfield two lengths away third. Paganelli was fourth just in front of Tigerism. Refresher was responsible for a fine performance, for after making all his own pace he went away in the run home to score decisively. Gibraltar ran his best race for a long time. He began better than usual and was never further back than third. 'He accounted for the rest as easily as the winner' beat him. Richfield waS last early but moved up on the outside coming into the straight. He came home strongly but never looked like getting up. Paganelli was doing in very easily three furlongs from home, but running, the last half mile into the wind found him out. Tigerism was well back all the way. He dropped back slightly at the half mile and was disr appointed when looking for an opening just after entering the straight. Monalpff never looked likely. *■ GREEN LINNET AT LAST.Only three paraded for the Ngaere Handicap but the public was undecided as to what to make favourite. Arvada was better supported than Glen Vane. Arvada received all the best of the start and was immediately out a length and a half in front of Glen Vane, with Green Linnet handy. Around the far bend Green Linnet moved up into second place on the outside and followed Arvada into, the straight. The leader ran put at the turn and Glen Vane got through. All the riders were 1 hard at it a furlong from home when Green Linnet and ,Glen Vane drew out and fought a great finish, the former winning by a head. Arvada was two lengths away. Green-Linnet showed a return to form and her finishing run was full of grit. However, she is not yet the same mare that won the Telegraph at Trentham last January. Glen Vane shaped really well though he wap assisted by a good run through on the fence at the turn for home. Arvada might have done better fiad her rider made more use of his advantage from the barrier. , BUGLE CALL’S GREAT FINISH. As was expected, the Hack Plate produced a great pool and a splendid contest. There was some trouble at the start and when the tapes were finally released Attentive was the smartest to begin, but Valpai and Lady Lulu immediately ran past him and after going a furlong the pair were showing the way from Attentive, Glowlight and Bugle Call. Racing into the back stretch first Palace and then Hit the Deck made forward moves, and passing the five furlongs Lady Lulu on the i outside and Valpai on the rails still held command from Hit the Deck, Glowlight, Palace and Davistock, With Arikitea last. Coming round the far bend the same pair were still in front and they led into the straight from Palace, Hit the Deck, Davistock and Glowlight, with Arikitea coming fast on the outside. The whole field spread out in the straight and they were all in it a furlong from home. Valpai was in front at the distance and looked a winner until Bugle Call came from the clouds and, finishing over everything, won by a length. Valpai hung on grimly to hold off Lady Lulu and Lady Vane. Hit the Deck, Arikitea and Attentive were the next to finish. Bugle Call began well enough and was handily placed when the field settled down, but soon after entering the back stretch he lost his position and was not in the first half dozen turning for home. However, he came with a wet sail over the last furlong to win going away. It was a fine performance. Valpai ran his usual honest race and half way up the straight he looked a winner, but he had no ; chance with Bugle Call at the finish. He has been placed second in each of his four starts on the circuit,

being beaten on each occasion by a different horse. Lady Lulu gave a much improved showing and was always in the picture. Lady Vane was not sighted in' the early stages and was second to last five furlongs from home, but came with a rattle at the finish. Hit the Deck moved up very quickly after entering the back stretch and had to cover a lot of ground. It was not surprising to find him weakening at the "finish. Gtowlight lost her position down the baqk owing to some crowding. She made an effort in the straight but did not get a good passage. Her size was against her in. this field. Davistock had every chance but failed to finish on. Arikitea was last five furlongs from home but then made a great run that made him more than a possibility at the distance. ■ He was weakening at the end. Palace again failed to stay and Attentive did. not display the same dash in the straight that he did at New Plymouth. / . ANOTHER FINE FINISH. Ganpat and Lucky Alice were in most demand in the Toko Highweight, and they were both in the money. From another good start Little Doubt was first to show out but was immediately joined by Orby’s Choice and Lucky Alice, with Tentcall, Ganpat, Easter Time and Tenacre following. Little Doubt soon dropped out and Lucky Alice and Orby’s Choice were 'making play past the half mile from Ganpat, Tenacre, Easter Time and Calamine, with Alloy.'moving up.: Lucky Alice soon had the measure of Orby’s Choice once the straight was reached but was joined by Alloy, and. then Ganpat came fast. Lucky Alice looked likely at the distance but did not respond under pressure and the trio passed the judge almost in line, Ganpat gaining the verdict by a neck, with Alloy a head in front of Lucky Alice. Calamine was a good fourth and . then came Easter Time, Chief Line and Tentcall. Ganpat raced much more generously than he did at New Plymouth and finished very resolutely. Alloy ran his best race at the meeting. He was always well placed over the last half mile and responded well under pressure, in the straight. Lucky Alice attempted to. win all the way but the last 50. yards found her wanting. Calamine’ ran a respectable race into fourth place. None of the others ever really looked dangerous, thdugh Tentcall was finishing on after losing her position' near the five furlong post. ■ t REREATU’S THIRD WIN. •< All the six acceptors went to the post in the Juvenile and Rereatu was always favourite. He was first out but was steadied and Prince Reno and Merry Way went up fast. When they had gone a furlong Prince Reno was a length in front of Merry Way, with Rereatu on the rE|ils half a length further back, followed by Miss Cavendish and Rapper. There was no material change until the straight, where Prince Reno. ran out a little and Rereatu shot through to the front and was soon well clear of Prince Reno and Merry Way, with Miss Cavendish ajso making an effort. Rereatu was stopping at the finish but he had still a length to spare from Prince Reno, who hung on better than Merry Way. Miss Cavendish was a good fourth, followed by Lady Bent and Rapper. z Form worked out well here as with Golden Hair out of the way Rereatu scored decisively. He was a little fortunate in getting through so easily at the straight entente as he was stopping at the end. Prince Reno confirmed his first day’s showing by a really good second. Merry Way appeared to have his measure 100 yards from the post but he fought out every yard very gamely and did best over the last bit. Merry Way again displayed plenty of pace but did not run on. Miss Cavendish ran a fair race, but Rapper was very disappointing. His recent racing has evidently got .to the bottom of him. CEREAL JUST GETS THERE. There were ten starters in the final event and the public went for Cereal, Haulbowline and Princess Star. Haulbowline and Star were quickest out from Hampden and Rita’s Light, with Sparkling Morn, Cereal and Illuminate all handy. Haulbowline and Princess Star were four or fivejengths clear going out of the back, with Sparkling Morn; Illuminate, Rita’s Light and Cereal following. They were still well clear as the field turned for home, and then Illuminate, Cereal and Rita’s Light went after them. They had them beaten at the distance and Cereal went on to win by a length from Rita’s Light, with Hr luminate half a length further back. Foulwind was fourth and Sparkling Morn fifth. , Cereal won like a good hack. He aia not get away well and his chance did not look bright coming into the straight. Even less than a furlong from home it did not appear as though he could do it, but he was clear at the finish. If he could only begin better he would win good open races. Rita’s Light was always handy and there was plenty of grit in her final effort. Illuminate was doing it as well as the other two at the distance but weakened a little over the last 50 yards. Foulwind finished fast m fourth place. Haulbowline and Princess Star beat themselves out in front and faded badly over the last furlong.
