FIRE AND ICE
FOUR CHILDREN PERISH. Vancouver, Dec. 16. Awakened by smoke, James Nesbitt, an Edmonton farmer, and his wife just had time to seize their two babies and rush from the blazing farmhouse. The flames prevented them from dashing in again tQ rescue their four children, a girl and three boys, who perished. Neighbours, who saw the fire, also arrived too late to give any assistance, and Mrs. Nesbitt was seriously frostbitten on the hands and feet before she could be carried to shelter. The Canadian prairies are experiencing a fierce winter. The thermometer has dropped to 35 degrees below zero in the city of Winnipeg, and similar terrible temperatures have been recorded at Edmonton and Calgary.
