SECOND DEATH AFTER SMASH

GISBORNE CROSSING ACCIDENT. WOMAN DIES OF INJURIES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, December 22. The second death as a result of the level crossing smash at Waihirere on October 21 occurred this morning, when Mrs. Elsie Mary Earpshaw, ..aged .39, who has been in hospital since the accident, succumbed to her injuries. The crossing near Waihirere railway station was the scene of a fatality on October 21 when a car driven by Mrs. Minnie Dunscombe, wife of Mr. J. Dunscombe, Gisborne, came into collision with a train from Mbtuhora. Mrs. Dunscombe was killed instantly, and Mirs. Elsie Mary Earnshaw, who was in ’ the front seat with her, was thrown into the back of the car and had' her left leg broken. Laura Earnshaw, the ten-year-old:daugh-ter of Mrs. Earnshaw, received severe head injuries. Mrs. Eva Steed and Mrs. Florence Willis, who .were jn the back seat with the girl, escaped bodily injury, but suffered severely from shock.

The party was driving from Gisborne to Puha to spend the day and thoser in the car apparently failed to notice the approaching train, which was moving slowly. The, car was struck by the corner of the engine and was thrown over and capsized. Railway employees righted the car and rendered first aid, the injured persons being sent by ambulance to hospital. The car, which was a new one, was completely wrecked.
