RACEHORSE TRAFFIC

STRATFORD-MAIN TRUNK LINE. . FIRST ARRIVALS”* YESTERDAY. Yesterday was rather a notable one in the annals of the racing history of Taranaki, as it marked the- occasion of the' arrival of the first team of racehorses from Auckland via the TaransklMain Trunk railway. They were entrained at Auckland at 0.30 p.m. on Monday night and arrived at New Plymouth at midday yesterday. This represented a saving of about eight hours' travelling, as compared with the time, taken by the only method of coming through Marton. “RAIL” SYSTEM TO OPERATE INSTALLED AT WAITARA WORKS. NEW KILLING ARRANGEMENTS. Starting this afternoon the- “rail" system will be in operation at the Waitara freezing works. This system is an adaptation of the “chain” system which has been operating in big meat works in America and other countries for many years. The principle is the same In that each man of the chain has only one particular operation to perform in connection with the killing and dressing of the beast, but whereas under the chain system power Is used to convey the carcase from one operator to the other, under the “rail” system each man as he completes his particular operation slides the carcase, which is suspended on an overhead rail, along to the next operator. - During the last day or two a staff has been engaged installing two separate rail systems on one of the present killing boards, and the installation will be completed this morning In readiness for a start this afternoon, when another 30 men, who have been selected from the waiting list of over 200 men, will commence operations. As each man has only one-operation to perform It is anticipated that each will soon become skilful at it, and therefore the output should soon show a considerable increase. That has been the experience at the other works in New Zealand where the system has already been installed this season. •

The installation of these two “rail” systems win give an additional output to that now being tallied by the butchers now operating, as they will still carry on as at present. On Monday their output reached the total of 2231, all lambs. Killing, however, is not being confined to lambs, pigs and large cattle also bejgg handled., • ’' ““
