Flames bounding suddenly from under the bonnet when an attempt was made to start the engine effectively delayed the further progress of the car In which Miss- D. A. Corrigan was about to drive Mr. H. Atmore, M.P., Nelson, to catch the express train at Hawera yesterday morning. Due-apparently to a short; Circuit in the ignition system-the wires were. 1 burn-; ing freely. Unsuccessful attempts were made to extinguish the outbreak With buckets of water and sacking. Luckily the benzine did not ignite and a couple of men from the garage of Newton King, Limited, who appeared in answer ,to an urgent telephone call were in time to avert further danger by the prompt application of a chemical extinguisher. Meanwhile time had passed and the train. was due. Another telephone ring to the station was in time to prevent the train’s departure. Mr. Atmore was rushed in one of the ’garage cars to the station and into the welcoming arms of a harassed guard anxiously scanning the horizon. Mr. Atmore climbed aboard and the train left only a few minutes after schedule. ’ The car, which belongs to Mr. J. R.. Corrigan, was charred and scorched, the cost of repairs being estimated at about £7. ■ . ' •: ,
