FROM TARANAKI TRACKS

BOXING DAY PREPARATIONS CARFEX AND AGA KHAN GO WELL. GLOWLIGHT’S GOOD SEVEN. The training tracks at Hawera and New Plymouth were very busy yesterday morning, when nearly all the horses with engagements at New Plymouth, Ellerslie and Awapuni were galloped. The horses for the Taranaki meeting will be a particularly fit lot and should keep the visiting contingent busy. The best efforts yesterday were those of Carfex, Aga Khan and Awaken at Hawera and Glowlight and Easter Time at New Plymouth. At New Plymouth the traoks were again hard and dry and a shower of rain would be welcomed by all the trainers. With the exception of Queen Agnes and Cereal all the horses worked on the plough, which is becoming faster every day. Refresher was sent twice round, the first time at half-pace and the second at three-quarter pace. He finished the second time by sprinting home from the two-furlong post in 265. He is in great order and promises to be one of the fancied runners in the Christmas Handicap. Glen Vane did a good working gallop over a round. Though he has no engagement the first day at New Plymouth he is ready to race and may be seen in action at Stratford.

Sparkling Morn did strong three-quar-ter pace work over a circuit. Matomi was exercised on the inside grass. He /will probably be given barrier practice during the next few days. R. Johnson worked his team during the breakfast interval but they were not asked to go fast. Tigerism worked the reverse way.

Queen Agnes and Cereal were well restrained over half : a mile on the trial grass in 51£s. The latter looks none the worse for his gallop of Saturday morning with Lady Quex. Orapai was holding Merry Way safe at the conclusion of five furlongs in Im. 1 4-ss. Merry Way is working very attractively for a hack and is looking more solid than formerly. Orapai as usual did his task like a good horse.

The 3-year-old filly Glowlight showed a big improvement on her previous form when she ran away from Gibraltar over seven furlongs in the smart time of lm. 29Js. She was five or six lengths clear after going three. furlongs, and though Gibraltar. made a big; attempt to make up the leeway Glowlight finished full of running three or four lengths in front of him at. the end. Her' showing was distinctly good and she should prove hard to dispose of in the Huatoki Plate on Monday. Singer did a couple of rounds at halfpace. Lady Quex did an easy gallop over five furlongs in lm. 4s. She was going well all the way. She is to be sent to Awapuni on Saturday morning to take her place in the field for the Palmerston North Stakes on Tuesday. Easter Time was again required to stand flat-footed at the half-mile peg, ■and though he took 14s. for the initial furlong he ran the distance in 49 4-55., finishing in great style. Nothing on the track is working better than this son of Illumination, and he has only to act up to his trials to keep The Tiger busy over the last furlong on Boxing Day. R. Drinkwater, who was attached to R. Johnson’s stable until about 12 months ago, was-on the track riding work. He went to Melbourne with T. R. George and returned only last month. He will be riding that trainer’s team—Revision, Miladi and Bettwsyscoed—at Awapuni next week.

I. L. Gray’s team, Palace, Lady Vane, Foulwind and Recreation, arrived yesterday at midday. W. Cathro with' four horses and W. Goscomb with five are due by. the train to-morrow, while. G. Paul, with five more, will arrive on Friday.

/A heavy mist delayed the commencement of the work at Hawera. As usual most of the fast work was done on the plough, which, owing to the dry spell, is becoming faster each day. No Doubt was the first to work and was apportioned easy exercise on the two-year-old track. Fryer’s Weathervane gelding and the Grandcourt—Cleasanta filly were sent from the barrier, both hopping out well. As usual, Carfex (Vaughan) and Aga Khan (Flowers) were companions oyer seven furlongs the reverse way. There was little between them when the winning post was reached, and after running the first half-mile in just under 50s. they finished on well to run the full distance in lm. 295. Although it must be taken into consideration that the track was very fast, this was a really good gallop and the prospects of the pair look bright at Ellerslie next week. Royal Papa (J. M. Pine) was inclined to loaf, occupying 51s. for half a mile.

La Crown (W. E. Pine) reeled off a merry five in lm. 3 l-ss. She went very fast during the early part to run the first three in 365. but was stopping at the finish.

, Richfield (Flowers) was half, a length in front of Tenacre (Vaughan) at the close of seven furlongs in lm. 325. There was not a great deal of pace on during the early stages but they improved in the last three furlongs.

After a round of pace work the youngsters Icier (Weston), Weatherzane (Feasey) and C. Jackson’s Diacquenod gelding (Duncan) ran home the last two furlongs, being bunched at the conclusion in 265. Icier, a half-sister to Mendip by Nigger Minstrel, strode along boldly, as also did Weatherzane, a half-brother by Weathervane to the defunct Tankard. After the gallop was over the Diacquenod youngster threw his rider, G. Duncan, when he sheered off from the plough to the trial grass and slipped. Luckily this promising young apprentice was not hurt, although he was temporarily knocked out. He was able to ride work later in the morning.

Orby’s Choice (J. M. Pine) broke away from Tentcall (W. E. Pine) at the sixfurlong peg and opened up a big lead on the Callaghan mare. She reduced it somewhat in the straight but was still' several lengths behind at the post in lm. 17As. Orby’s Choice hit out well but Tentcall disappointed as her track work of late has been excellent.

Calapat was allotted strong pace work on the inside plough. Hanipden (Grylls) and Miss Cavendish (Coyle) left five furlongs behind in lm. 3 3-ss.

Awaken (Flowers) turned the tables on Calamine (W. E. Pine) over a mile and was a length clear at the end in lm. 44|s. Awaken is improving rapidly and will be in excellent fettle for the holiday racing. Green Linnet (Weston), March Alone (Duncan), and Attentive (Feasey) ran home the last three furlongs of a round of pace work in 38 2-ss. On the course proper Rapper (W. E. Pine) surprised by finishing: on terms with Golden Hair (Grylls), recording 51 l-ss. for the half-mile. Golden Hair led over the early part but, galloping resolutely, Rapper* gathered her in. down the straight. He will be having his first run at New Plymouth on Boxing Day. Davistock (Coyle) and) Constant Sun (Flowers) had no difficulty in running seven furlongs in lm. 33 3-ss.

Karanga (Brough) slipped over half a mile in 50s. There is no doubt that this filly has plenty of pace, although she may not stay too well.

After breakfast The Tiger was given solid three-quarter pace work. Lady Bent jumped out. of,.the barrier just as smartly as Chief Link and will require very little more practice. Divola (L. A. Pine) left two furlongs

behind . in 25Js. R. Brough’s roan gelding (Brough) and O. Cox’s Diacquenod' youngster (Grylls) were, sent over a similar distance and showed plenty, of pace "to register'. 25 l-ss. The former is. by, Ruapapa out of a Guianforte—Mirthful mare and is a typical descendent of the famous roan breed coming from the Musket mare Vivandiere.

Copey, Goldzone, Santanet and-. Sandlark were restricted to trotting exercise on the outside of the two-year-old track. Little Doubt was given more strenuous pace work on the inside plough. Copey. appears to be in good order after his let-up and his cut leg has healed well, although the skin appears to’ be still rather tender.
