TANGARAKAU FLAT

SCHOOL BREAKING-UP FUNCTION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual prize-giving ceremony of the Raekohua school (Tangarakau Flat) took place on Thursday afternoon, the chairman, Mr. E. S. Sinclair, presiding over a large attendance of parents and others interested in the school. The exhibition of handwork was a feature of the ceremony, and the manner in which the various articles were displayed reflected greatly to the credit of the members of the staff responsible and was the subject of much favourable comment. The first part of the programme consisted of songs, recitations and musical items by the various standards, and was much appreciated by the large attendance present. The headmaster, Mr. Pearce, addressed the gathering. After outlining the year’s work, and mentioning the difficulty of retaining a high standard of organisation of the classes owing to the present system of rationing among the junior teachers, he stressed the importance of the children continuing their education so that when times became more normal they would be able to take their places in the community. In thanking the residents of Tangarakau for the generous way in which they had supported the school, the chairman, Mr. Sinclair, referred to the fine work of the headmaster and his staff during the year, and expressed his regret that owing to the lowering of the grade of the school they would be leaving the district.
