WHEN YOU “JAM” YOUR FINGERS.
A bruised or pinched finger can cause intense pain, particularly if the nail be affected. The most speedy relief is gained by putting the finger immediately into warm water, and keeping it there for ten minutes or so. If the nail finally comes off, soap-plaster spread on leather should be used to protect the tender part while the new * nail is growing. * A “Jammed” finger, caused by shutting a door or window on the hand, is also extremely painful. If only the end of the finger be nipped, the nail blackens because, the blood, escaping from the small broken vessels and getting pent up under the nail, separates it from its attachment beneath. This causes the pain. Relief may be obtained by plunging the finger into water as hot as can possibly be' borne. This softens the nail, which then accomodates itself to the blood beneath, and so the pain is quickly diminished. The finger should be given a cold compress afterwards, and' kept in a sling, if possible, until no pain is felt; ' ■'
