NAVAL SURGEON’S EXPERIENCE.
Wellington, Dec. 17. Among the passengers who arnved in Wellington yesterday by the lonic was Surgeon-Lieutenant H. Gillman Wells, R.N., who has come out to relieve Surgeon-Lieutenant-Commander K. B McVicar in H.M.S. Veronica. Lieutenant Wells is young and has no - previously visited New Zealand, he has been as far as Australia. The present trip means that his duties have taken him from the extreme north ot the world to the south. He has been m Icelandic waters on a fishing protection S When he went up to Iceland in March he had expected it to be a matter of fact it was warmer than Eng land. Like New Zealand, Icelmidhad many hot springs, and a resident there had had the brilliant idea of growing early tomatoes. Huge greenhouses were, built and connected with fte tot sprmgs so that the plants wold grow, xne result was that early tomatoes were being produced almost within the Arctic C ?he e ’ fishery protection work w£> done by a sloop of samekmd Veronica, together with three smaller boats. Their work was mainly of a supervisory nature, and it was tneir business to see that there was no poachBritish waters. Foreigners might otherwise trespass, wit danger that beds might be ruined.
