An ex-Aucklander now resident in Fiji writes to a friend stating that on the sugar cane plantations there has been a record crop this year, and people are looking forward to a ver" busy time when the mills start crushing. Incidentally, he adds that there has been a gold strike in Fiji, which is rumoured to rival Kimberley, Kalgoorlie and Yukon in richness. If the strike proved to be anything equal to the growing reports, stated thj correspondent ih facetious, vein, he proposed taking out a publican’s license, importing a few nice girls from Auckland for the bar trade when the gold rush set in, and making enough money to retire in two or three years. PLANTATION PROFITS. •- Anyone travelling through N.Z. at present and seeing the large number of pine plantations now being milled cannot fail to appreciate the potential value of the large pine forests established by N.Z. Perpetual Forests, Ltd. Sawmillers are finding that it costs less, and is much more profitable to mill plantations instead of natural forests, which are now mostly inaccessible. The importation of foreign boxing timber has dropped considerably, and the milling of Insignis Plantations has been responsible for this. Very satisfactory returns are being received for trees planted without any thought of profit.—Advt, -.. ? 2
